Hi. Today I show you how looks and works latest stable release of Linux Solus 1.2 from Solus-Project.

Solus is a fairly new Linux operating system. The project was developed in 2011 under name SolusOS and based on Debian. In 2013, development of the system was stopped, and the system is abandoned. However, in 2014 developers resumed working on it under the name Evolve OS, but due to problems with the proprietary name, the name was changed to Solus. Version Solus 1.0 titled Shannon was released on 27 December 2015. The last stable version is currently Solus 1.2 (second bugfix release), and in a few days you should see Solus 1.2.1.

Currently, the system is created from scratch, no longer based on Debian. The system also uses own Budgie desktop environment with the new Sidebar interface - Raven, a whole is compatible with GTK3 and is integrated with GNOME applications. It is completed by its own package manager eopkg.

The system offers many improvements, among others, allows you to run client Steam digital distribution of games without a built-in base libraries - steam-runtime, replacing them with newer libraries available in the system. In addition, it is possible to forced Steam to run in 32-bit or 64-bit mode, which is in some cases offer the most gaming performance.

Developers provide system with includes a number of improvements designed to allow achieve higher performance than in other Linux systems such as Ubuntu 16.04, or Mint 17.3.

This new release use Linux kernel 4.4.13 LTS, GTK 3.18, Firefox 47, Nautilus 3.18.5, Rhythmbox 3.3.1, Thunderbird 45.1.0 and Vlc 2.2.4.

From my tests carried out in a "live", I can say that the system looks very interesting. From the graphics side, because it looks great in dark colors, as well as technical as the system works quite quickly and efficiently. Solus 1.2 have also minor errors Budgie such as the disappearance of the menu bar, or after some time of operation the refusal to run the application GTK3. However, this fault to which see in LIVE mode, the normal installation may not occur.

Solus jest dosyć nowym systemem operacyjnym Linux. Projekt powstał w 2011 roku pod nazwą SolusOS i opierał się na Debianie. W 2013 roku rozwój systemu został zatrzymany, a system porzucony. Jednak w 2014 roku wznowiono nad nim pracę pod nazwą Evolve OS, jednak z uwagi na problemy z zastrzeżoną nazwą, nazwę zmieniono na Solus. Wersja Solus 1.0 zatytułowana Shannon została wydana 27 grudnia 2015 roku. Ostatnią stabilną wersją jest obecnie Solus 1.2 (drugie wydanie poprawkowe), a za kilka dni powinno pojawić się uzupełniające Solus 1.2.1.

Obecnie system jest tworzony od podstaw, nie bazując już na Debianie. System wykorzystuje także autorskie środowisko graficzne Budgie wraz z nowym sidebarem interfejsu - Raven, całość jest kompatybilna z GTK3 i jest zintegrowana z wieloma aplikacjami GNOME. Całość dopełnia własny menadżer pakietów eopkg.

System oferuje wiele usprawnień m.in. umożliwia uruchamianie klienta cyfrowej dystrybucji gier Steam bez wbudowej bazy bibliotek - steam-runtime, zastępując je nowszymi bibliotekami dostępnymi w systemie. Dodatkowo możliwe jest przymuszenie Steama do uruchomienia w środowisku 32-bitowym lub 64-bitowym, co ma w niektórych przypadkach oferować większość wydajność gier.
Jak zapewniają jego twórcy system zawiera szereg usprawnień mających pozwolić osiągnąć wyższą wydajność niż w systemach takich jak Ubuntu 16.04 czy też Mint 17.3.

Z nowości należy wymienić zastosowanie Linux kernel 4.4.13 LTS, GTK 3.18, Firefox 47, nautilus 3.18.5, rhythmbox 3.3.1, thunderbird 45.1.0 czy też vlc 2.2.4.

Z moich testów dokonanych w trybie "live", mogę powiedzieć, że system prezentuje się niezwykle ciekawie. Zarówno ze strony graficznej, bo wygląda znakomicie w ciemnych barwach, jak i technicznej gdyż system działa całkiem szybko i sprawnie. Denerwują jednak drobne błędy Budgie takie jak znikanie paska menu czy po pewnym czasie działania odmowa uruchomienia aplikacji GTK3. To jednak usterki na jakie natknąłem się w trybie LIVE, przy normalnej instalacji mogą one nie występować.

Z całą pewnością, polecam ten system. Z zainteresowaniem będę śledził jego dalsze losy.
