This is the longplay of Mutation Nation, action beat 'em up game developed, distributed and released by SNK in 1992. It was initially developed for the Neo Geo arcade platform and later ported to other systems, including the Neo Geo AES home console.
The game's story takes place in the year 2050, where a mad scientist has been shut down by his superiors after performing bizarre biological experiments. However, shortly afterwards, his laboratory exploded and the scientist himself mysteriously disappeared. Now, several years later, there are new buildings on top of the forgotten slum where the experiments took place, and suddenly, a genetic virus has started to spread among the tenants, turning them into vicious mutants. Two young fighters from the local town, Ricky Jones and Johnny Hart, come back to town after being away for a long time and upon seeing the chaos that is going on, they take it upon themselves to clean up the town before the mutants spread across the country. Along the way, they discover not only the mutants, but also mechanically-engineered enemies that the mad scientist has created to stop them.
The game is a typical beat 'n up, with normal attacks against enemies. Instead of using weapons, the player has four types of magic spheres, which can be picked up by the player and used for special attacks. Each sphere is represented by a letter and a color that help the player to differentiate them, the powers are Light, Fire, Lighting and Wind, each with different characteristics. If players don't have orbs available, they can sacrifice part of their life gauge to unleash a flurry of attacks. Picking up the spheres gives the player powers and recharges some of the life bar. The game is relatively challenging as unfortunately it only gives one life per credit, but quite fun, especially playing 2 players with an emulator. The bosses are challenging, but can be beaten quite easily in multiplayer if both players attack the boss from opposite sides with normal attacks, while investing special attacks on hordes of common enemies. It's a great game from the golden era of beat 'n ups.
