This is the longplay of Cutthroat Island, an action, beat n up and platform game based on the movie of the same name. The game was developed by Software Creations and published by Acclaim Entertainment in 1995 for the Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Game Boy and Game Gear. This is the Super Nintendo version.
The game's story is based on that of the movie, which tells the story of a map to find a fabulous pirate treasure, a map that was cut into three parts by an old buccaneer and divided among his three children. Several years later, in the second half of the seventeenth century (more precisely in the year 1688), the story actually begins, with Morgan Adams (played by actress Geena Davis) as the protagonist. Morgan goes after his uncle, the pirate Dawg Brown, who captured his father, Black Harry Adams. Black Harry has one of the three map pieces, which leads to a huge stash of gold hidden on remote Cutthroat Island. Dawg has another piece, after stealing it from the dead body of a third brother, Richard, while a fourth brother, Mordechai, has the third and final piece. Black Harry Adams refuses to give Dawg his piece and escapes with the help of his daughter Morgan, but not before being mortally wounded. Before dying, Harry reveals to his daughter the location of the map piece: in the scalp. After scalping her dead father for part of the map, Morgan, now captain of her father's ship, the Morning Star, sets out to find the treasure. Unfortunately, the instructions appear to be in Latin, which no one on board can read. So they head to nearby Port Royal to find a translator. There, they discover that one of the slaves up for auction, a crook and thief named William Shaw (played by Matthew Modine), is fluent in Latin. After winning the auction, Morgan manages to buy Shaw to join her crew.
Wanted posters are put up with the aim of capturing Morgan. Several obstacles await the heroine, who, in addition to facing her uncle Dawg, also needs to escape the greed and ambition of the corrupt governor Patrick Ainslee, who is also after the treasure. Morgan needs to have all three parts of the map and Shaw's help to decipher it and find the treasure.
The game is a mix of beat 'n up, platform and action. The player can control Morgan or Shaw and play in two modes (Swordplay, with an emphasis on fighting with swords most of the time, or Brawler, in which the characters use empty hands more and finish off enemies with the sword), Morgan is faster and has higher jumps, while Shaw is physically stronger. In addition to fighting with swords, characters can also obtain items such as knives, rocks, bombs, and muskets to throw at enemies. In addition to attacking, you must defend your attacks and be careful not to fall into traps or jump from high places. The game's music is interesting and the graphics are not great, but they work.
The film Cutthroat Island was promising and also innovated by being a film about pirates, but it was a tremendous failure at the box office, having been considered the biggest box office failure of all time by the Guiness Book in the 90s, costing almost 100 million dollars. and raising only 10 million, in values at the time, in addition to being responsible for the bankruptcy of its production company, Carolco Pictures. The film was already extremely troublesome during filming and when it was released, it became a flop.
At the time of the game's launch, a promotion was held where players who found all the treasure chests in the game and correctly answered the card questions competed for real prizes.
