MAME - Hyper NeoGeo 64 - Sometimes You've Just Got To Cheat... (no commentary)
Bit of a tangent this one, because it's not actually a progress video, but an insight into how progress is sometimes made. One important timesaving tool that should be in any developer's arsenal is the use of cheats. If you're reverse engineering a piece of hardware it's important to find as many possible cases of evidence / use cases for hardware behaviour as you can. In this case, Xtreme Rally / Off Beat Racer only shows the name entry and credits roll if you beat the default high score which I was never good enough to go normally.
To work around this issue of me not being good enough at the game, I found a cheat. I can now confirm that the rendering isn't quite right on the name entry screen in MAME, and can check if it gives me any more information to work with.
I've also been using cheats to get to later stages on the Samurai Shodown 64 games etc. As there are already some handy cheats for those in the MAME cheat files that you can find online.
