Manhunt (Playstation 4 Pro) - Gameplay
Welcome to Game Play. A series, of sorts, where I check out various video games and share the pure gameplay experience with you.
Today we're taking a look at Manhunt on the Playstation 4 Pro.
My immediate impressions so far:
I'm a sound fan of modern consoles being backwards compatible. It's one of the main reasons why Xbox is my primary platform as I love that I can both re-play and get to experience some of these older games for the first time on my current system. Although Microsoft is way ahead in this regard, Sony is doing remarkable strides to offer a similar experience.
As an added bonus, both Sony and Microsoft (and I presume Nintendo as well) offer enhanced versions of their previous releases when running on the newer hardware. The visuals are sharper than ever before and the resolution has recieved a noticable bump. More than enough reasons and motivations for me to fire up an old game. But is it worth it?
Perhaps not all of the time. For instance, Manhunt is both a fun and a surprisingly intense game, but the gameplay, camera and overall controls haven't exactly aged well. It helps little that I'm not exactly great at the game either.
But it still holds that certain charm that only games from the Playstation 2 era have. Having finished the intial stage of the game, I'm not sure if I'll ever return considering the vast amount of games in my libraries that I've yet to check out. The obviously dated controls, gameplay and camera movement are definitely among the game's limiting aspects, but the setting, tone and the visuals combined with a somewhat intriguing story help elevate the game.
If you're fond of games from the past, perhaps a fan of Rockstar Games or simply curious you'll most certainly find something here to hold your interest. Others, who are more accustomed to modern day controls and stealth mechanics, might not be too thrilled with the game's rather clunky controls.
Either way, I recommend checking it out if for nothing else than to simply enjoy one of Rockstar's more interesting and perhaps even controversial releases. When writing this, I ultimately decided to go back and continue my criminal adventure despite previously stating my doubts to do so.
The game was recorded directly on the console to an external HDD. No postwork has been done.
