A playthrough of Parker Brothers' 1990 NES game, Heavy Shreddin'.

Released under the name Snowboard Challenge in PAL territories.

I'll be honest - as a kid I utterly loathed this game. A friend had it, and whenever it went in the NES, I'd find an excuse not to play. My thumb hurt from the previous game. I had to pee. Anything.

Now I realize that it was largely because I had no idea what I was doing. Mind you, neither did he, but he seemed to have fun with it anyway.

It's pretty simple - make it to the end within a time limit, or live until the end - or as the game puts it, "Survival required." Odd choice of words there. Anyway, there are stunts that can be done by pressing A with any of the directionals, and these are used to do the indicated moves on the half-pipe and to clear long gaps and obstacles that otherwise would own you pretty hard.

There are a five different trails with slightly different tasks to perform on each, with the difficulty being hiked pretty significantly between each. Your success depends on your reaction time in the earlier stages, but by the end, you won't be able to clear obstacles without memorizing their placements - especially on the fifth and final leg. Often times, by the time you see the obstacle there isn't enough time to get into position to clear it. I ended up taking copious notes as I practiced that final stage again and again. At least the animation looks good, even if you knee comes out of your hip.

Overall it can be fun once you learn it, but the difficulty level towards the end dampens the experience a bit. But hey, at least if you make it, you get some bizarrely vacant looking 80s-hot woman at the end of each stage telling you this like, "Good," and "Smooth." Yeah.

And if it weren't obvious from the first screen or the music, this is undoubtedly the work of Imagineering. It feels a lot like their other games, if you want a point of comparison. It's not quite Cool Boarders or 1080, I'll say that much.
