Game Boy Hour of Power: Great GB Music - NintendoComplete
2,421A full hour of classic tunes from Nintendo Game Boy games. This is not a "Best of" nor a "Top 10" list, but rather a sampling of memorable, classic game themes. Hope you all enjoy it!
It really is amazing how hard of a beat the old gray brick could drop, especially when the sound was done by somebody that really knew their way around the hardware! The GB wave channel also gives it a pretty distinct sound from the NES - it often makes the music sound like a cross of the NES with the TG16 or the Virtual Boy when it's used for melody lines. The Metal Masters song here would totally sound at home on the TeleroBoxer soundtrack, for whatever my opinion might be worth :)
Please note that I limited selections to games that received official English-language releases only. There are no Japanese exclusives in this list.
And for anyone curious about the video itself, the background image is taken from the system's box art, the boxes are edited from the thoroughly excellent collections of game box images maintained by the HyperSpin community (thank you!), and the footage for the games was recorded using Retroarch's DMG shader. Unlike my normal Game Boy playthrough videos (where I balance the filter settings between the nostalgic effect and actual watchability), this video has been recorded to accurate reflect the display of the GB's original 1989 LCD panel. I was using a real Game Boy for comparison to make sure I got it right. For those of you that didn't have one (or are too young to remember it), yes, the screen really did blur that badly. It would get worse, too, since the contrast would deteriorate steadily as the battery power was depleted.
