Massif Press: The Lancer RPG core book!
I've mentioned my being a fan of Tom Parkinson- Morgan's Kill 6 Billion Demons comic before (https://killsixbilliondemons.com/ just make sure you go to the beginning as there's been some major spoilers storywise of late ) and when I found out that he was going to be involved in a hardcore mecha tabletop RPG... I was intrigued. Enter Lancer.
While the initial (and to be honest, biggest) attraction of this book was the art, there's no denying that a lot of care went into creating the world all these mechs populate as well. I can't speak for the rules or mechanics just yet, as I haven't had a chance to properly try it... and I'm not sure if I will for some time.
The game has very distinct phases though- what happens outside of missions and combat is very free flowing and narrative based... but when combat starts it's a full on grid based tactical battle. GREAT!... but where are the minis then?
That's what I keep asking myself going through this book. Where are the awesomely designed tabletop mecha to match the gorgeous artwork all throughout the book? There's no denying that there's some serious talent behind the art as well. I can recognize the style of a few artists- a few I can spot from their work on Prophet with Brandon Graham.
I know there's a slew of supplements and PDFs available and continuing to trickle out, but there's something about the tactile nature of a big heavy RPG book that I'll always enjoy.
Heck, maybe we'll even see them deluxify the Kill 6 Billion Demons RPG and put it all into a big swanky book. Just like they ought to be doing with the comic...
