Alright it's time to talk about Mega Man Legacy Collection 2. Right off the bat I check the challenges and there's speedruns for individual stages in Megaman 7 and 8. The remixed stages are nice but why couldn't we just play quick runs through each individual level. At least we would be able to play the robot masters in any order again. Which is a huge problem introduce in Mega Man 7. By having all 8 robot masters playable from the start you have 8! or 40320 possible ways to play through the game. With the new system you have 4! x 4! or 576 possible ways to play. And that feels limited because you ought to collect certain items first anyway so it's pretty much linear. And not to mention the intro stage that insults our intelligence and wastes our time. Gameplay wise the sprites are too large and the game becomes more about memorizing the level than actually reacting to things. And look how big these ladder are and Mega Man still can't grab them. Mega Man 8 contains some of the problems of 7 with added effects of bad voice acting and embaressing cutscene. There are few good innovations with 7 and 8 such as the ingame shop, screw based economics, and the boss weapons are interesting and versitile, but the bosses themselves are too easy. You can also switch weapons with the triggers which should have been added to the first 6 games but that's another story. 9 and 10 are the real gems of the bunch. And if you don't have Mega Man 9 or 10 I can recommend picking up Legacy Collection for at least these 2 games, which come with all of the unlockables like endless runs, protoman and bass, and the time trials that came with the original game, in addition to remixed challenge although the trophies could have been more comprehensive.
As far the emulation goes there's no latency, so you're good to go with the PS4 Duelshock anyway. It's impressive how they able to emulate a super nintendo, playstation, and modern game without touching the code, I just wish they could have done a little more to help the series, like add the ability to cycle weapons with the trigger in 9, or turn off the voices in 8.
There's a save system, but its different than Legacy 1. It's checkpoint based apparently you can't save between rounds? You have the option of turning on different boards that time or adjust screen setting or a filter. There's also an armor mode I was curious about if it protects you from nails. It doesn't. There's a museum with character art and you can hear the soundtrack. Again, the songs are not available as a play list. So all you can do is hear loops of the same song unless you want to keep switching. Overall, Legacy Collection 2 delivers an authentic emulation and offer over 50 additional challenges with online leaderboards, but missed several opportunities to correct some issues. Maybe the devs were told to stand down, or maybe they know that there's going to be another collection someday. If there is I hope we get 8 bit versions of 7 and 8 where you can play the Robots in any order.
