Part 3 of the MMX3 minimalist speed run

Boy oh boy is this level uninteresting. Despite housing my favorite fight in the game, it's a painfully uninteresting romp through a lot of stationary enemies and empty terrain. It begins with an elevator section, because of fucking course it does, which is made harder than it should be by those missile firing enemies, one of the rare instances where we actually have to deal with them. After that and some tepid conveyer belt nonsense, we get to the first of many mini-bosses in the game, a fancy wire frame shuriken. In a stage based on a military base. Sure, why not? This bastard actually has invincibility frames, unlike most of the mini-bosses, so we pass up pelleting him in favor of good ol' charge shot action. The boss itself doesn't offer much to talk about. After this is the hardest actual section of stage, the military hangars. Here we're introduced to the helicopter enemies, who are unendingly annoying. Their firing patterns are highly uncertain, and their missiles appear to have the very selective ability to block mid charge shots, which means blowing through them isn't possible without delays to fit in extra charge shots. They fire when level with X, which makes it possible to skip the last two, but the first few must be dealt with, as the other enemies make it impossible to dash past them. This culminates in an area that takes about 10 seconds to get through, and ended up being the biggest catalyst for lost runs. This area would normally house a second mini-boss, but beating Gravity Beetle cuts that out entirely. And that's a damn good thing because besides extending the stage, it's also easily the single dumbest fucking thing in the entire game. An airship lands, and a small robot flies down 9 crates, which X destroys. No attacks. The pilot doesn't attack you, and there's no other enemies. You're just shooting crates. This is supposed to be Doppler's weapon supply by the way. By beating this boss, you'll downgrade the missile firing enemies from red to green, which causes them to lose their grenade toss, thank lord, although this same effect happens even if you don't fight the crates, so dealing with them at their sharpest in Gravity Beetle's stage to nerf them and remove the crate bullshit is the better option.
The rest of the stage is fodder, so let's talk about the boss, who is easily the most fun fight in the game. Being the only other boss of the 8 to not use some kind of ramming attack (trust me that'll become more evident soon), Hornet attacks by instead firing his children at you. Oi... This compounds in a a rather uneventful first phase, but he really kicks it up a notch at half health, where he will fly in a precise pattern and shoot a red target that causes the babies to tail X. They take a full charge shot to take down, and they move independently of Hornet himself, which makes it incredibly easy to get trapped. There's quite a few ways to deal with them. You can avoid the target and try to kill the babies (oh my) or you can activate the trigger early and deal with Hornet's flight path while two or three babies chase you. It's incredibly involved and incredibly fun. Next up is Blizzard Buffalo, whose rundown probably won't be a small fucking essay, so those who don't exactly enjoy reading a 2500+ word description can rest easy.
