Mega Man X3 Minimalist Speed Run - Gravity Beetle
Part 2 of the MMX3 speed run
This is a segmented speed run through Mega Man X3, in it's entirety, under the following restrictions; no weapons, no upgrades, no damage sustained under any circumstance, and no use of Zero (outside of a forced section in the Intro Stage segment.)
This is a bit of an odd stage to properly kick off this run, but I've selected it for a few reasons. The first is something I'll detail further in the next segment, so let's ignore it for now. The second is the presence of what's probably the hardest single trick in this run. Most of the stage suffers hard from the inadequacies of the level design that I laid out in the first part's description. Much of it is very interesting topography wasted on lots of bland and empty sections, which is hammered even further by the lack of effort in the enemy placement. The stage begins with an introduction to one of most annoying foes in the game, those red bastards on legs have a grenade lobbing attack that is just no end of trouble to deal with. Combine this with their unreasonable durability, and the one instance of challenging enemy placement in this stage at the very beginning, where two of them along with the small cannon enemy are placed in such a way that getting past all of it requires some serious good timing, it's just a mess. The worst part of the level is the elevator section. This is something X3 really, REALLY likes and I can't understand it for the life of me. Thankfully, a decent majority of the more cumbersome elevators in this game can be skipped, usually by some simple wall jumping. The elevator section here is no exception, except for the 'simple' part. Consistently nailing the jumps needed to skip the elevator here is a complete pipe dream. It requires a disgusting level of precision, and getting all three of them perfectly before the elevator itself invalidates any time you might have saved is near impossible. This run only gets two out of three, which is still the preferable option, so I just go with it, especially since getting Gravity Beetle to behave an be a very irritating affair. His first phase is incredibly fun, he tosses around projectiles that will bounce on the walls, take half of X's health, and have surprisingly large hitboxes. When he really wants to be a jackass he can toss two of em, and finding a safe spot in those situations is ungodly annoying Thankfully, and unfortunately, he gets much easier during his desperation phase, where he develops sudden memory loss and forgoes his projectiles in favor of trying to charge X. Over and over. Pretty disappointing, but next up is Blast Hornet who thankfully provides a much more fun and consistent fight.
