Mega Man Zero 2: No Damage (Active Form) Panter Flauclaws
Mega Man Zero 2 (GBA), no damage taken in Panter Flauclaws's stage while achieving an S-Rank (100 points), Active Form only. This video is part of a series; a playthrough dedicated to using only the Active Form for more stylish and fresh gameplay. This is a NG+ file.
Panter Flauclaws (Neo Arcadia Train) Overview:
This stage... isn't too friendly to Active Form, sadly. The dashing rolling slash is next to useless here because 1) By defeating Phoenix first, we ended up getting rid of all the Pantheons in the initial four stages, and 2) Just about everything here is actually pretty durable enough to survive the first hit of the slash, giving them a free hit on you if you even attempt to roll. And since Active Form's main strength is it's speed and aerial rolling slash, that's literally all you've got to rely on, along with the buster. Thankfully, Tenshouzan is excellent for killing the armored enemies after you remove their protective helmet. Otherwise, even Active Form's rolling slashes will have a tough time killing it before it could jump backwards.
Preemptive shots from the buster is also a much-desired strategy when you know those rolling enemies are coming, because just like in Zero 1, these things roll on screen FAST and with little to no warning other than the bouncing sound they make upon being dropped off (which usually sounds off mere milliseconds before they appear...). Even when you know they're coming, it's very easy to mistime the Z-Saber because the window of opportunity to attack them close range is REALLY tight due to the speed of them approaching. Though if you want an easy mode alternative, just charge the buster up and keep the speed up as you fire. Watch dem hot wheels break apart before they even pop-up on screen.
(Also, due to the whole Phoenix thing, the absent Pantheons end up hurting your enemy score a bit, so you've got to grind a little to make up for it...)
Panter Flauclaws (why the heck they purposely misspell these boss names just to be cute is beyond me. Putting that "h" in there for "Panther" would've just been better. As much as the Zero games are my favorite, a lot of these Maverick names are flat out stupid and very forgettable, BUT I DIGRESS) is a fairly challenging boss, completely designed around the RNG (shocker), but unlike Phoenix, doesn't change the value every friggin' frame. Similar to Magma Dragoon in X4, Panter's got several different attack patterns he rotates between in no particular order, so it won't really do you any good with me explaining them too much. Probably his most glaring flaw is his habit of using his special attack (electrifying the entire train) immediately after his dive kick or after he slashes out his three green energy cutters (nice throwback to Boomerang Cutter though with the pink variant. Sneaky one there, Inti). Granted, he's got one pattern that doesn't do this, buuuuuuuuuut 90% of the time, he's going to do that special attack as a follow-up, so you can easily predict it and jump to the next train, since he needs a bit of start-up to do it.
Standing near the center is an ideal spot to avoid his attacks, for Panter likes to pressure you to the edges to disorient and confuse you. Stay in the middle (more specifically on the central edges of the trains) and you'll have ample time to react to whatever he decides to throw at you. Panter Flauclaws is mostly a reactionary Magma Dragoon style battle.
