It did the mash, it did the Mega Mash! Now, as awesome as the game would be with that song playing in the background, it must be said that Mega Mash is absolutely awesome in its own way.

Sure, at first glance you'd think, well, it's just another silly 8-bit retro game. Sure, it is a retro game, and it may be all 8-bit-y, but it's definitely not just another copy.

First off, as you might expect, it's an 8-bit retro-style game. As such, the graphics are old-school so don't expect anything too flashy or snazzy here. Still, the graphics that are there present themselves very, very nicely. Likewise, the sounds are 8-bit-y, but that just adds to the game's charm. But enough of that, just what is it that makes the game so great?

Rather than being a simple clone of a single game, Mega Mash combines all sorts of old school games into one. It doesn't, however, just act as a game selector that allows you to play those games. Instead, all the different aspects of those games are all inter-twined into a single game, with rips in the fabric of gaming reality littered all over the playing field. While you might be playing a Mario clone at one point, you'll be doing Bomberman the next.

And speaking of Mario, anyone who's played Super Mario Brothers will immediately recognize the first level. Sure, you're controlling a dancing bunny instead of an overweight Italian plumber, but all the parts of the level are there and obvious to anyone familiar with the game. At the end of the level though, instead of hitting a flag pole, you're tossed into a Gradius clone and fighting your way through a space field while piloting a spaceship. What's neat is that one part of the game will affect others, as if while piloting your spaceship you fire and the blast goes outside of the Gradius area, it turns into fireballs not unlike what our Italian Plumber would be using.

At first, the levels are fairly straightforward, with the different game types cleanly separated. Later on, the different areas interact with each other a whole lot more, and you'll need to use elements from one game to solve puzzles in alter ones. For example, at one point you'll need to jump into a Ninja game to traverse an area, switch back to the Mario-clone, flip a switch, jump into a Tetris game, use the Tetris blocks to create an area to traverse, back to the Mario-clone, and onwards with the level.

So if you're feeling in a nostalgic mood and want some good solid gameplay, then look no further than Mega Mash!
