What do you get when you combine Space Invaders with a puzzle game? I'm not really sure, but it's probably something like Colorful Invaders. Granted, it's not really that much of a puzzler, in the strictest sense of the word, but it does require a bit more strategy than simply blasting endless wave after endless wave apart.

Colorful Invaders may look to be a simple Space Invaders clone, what with the squiggly little baddies falling down the screen towards you, but it does update the graphics and gameplay quite a bit. for one, you won't be staring at pixelated little blobs this time around. Sure, they're still low-res graphics that aren't in fancy-shmancy 3D or anything, but they're not needlessly simplistic either.

The audio is neat though, with catchy techno music providing a nice backdrop to the tiny little explosions and pew-pew sounds of the laser blasters. How it's audible in the cold, dark vacuum of outer space will forever be a mystery, but not enough of one to affect enjoyment of the game in the slightest.

Unlike other games in this genre, you're not actually doing any shooting. Rather, the game will automatically do the shooting for you leaving you with only the movement of your ship to worry about. You do, however, have to switch the color of your attacks to match the color of the baddies though. Red shots, for example, won't affect green baddies and vice versa. Why? Perhaps the same reason that the explosions can be heard in space I suppose. Or maybe the aliens are particularly aesthetically inclined and don't like the blend of colors. We shall never know.

Along the way, you can get upgrades for your different guns allowing you to shoot faster and better. Further, you'll even encounter more interesting formations as the baddies group together and fly around in nifty little patterns. Sure, those patterns don't actually do much, but they're fun to watch. It gets even more fun when they start shooting though. You won't really have enough bullets whizzing past you to make it a bullet-hell game, but with only three hits before you go all explodey, it can make things a bit tense at times. What's more, the color requirement can make things a bit tricky, as you have to focus on where you're shooting, what bullets are coming at you, and if you're shooting with the right color.

To wrap up, Colorful Invaders is a fun and interesting little game. It adds a neat little twist to an otherwise all too familiar game and executes it rather well.
