Heavy Truck - Game preview / gameplay
15Guns, explosions, tanks, artillery, and everything in between. Yup, that's what you get from Heavy Truck, that, and more making for an excellent side-scroller.
The first thing you'll notice is that Heavy Truck looks pretty awesome. It's got great-looking graphics with the terrain, the explosions, and pretty much everything being highly detailed and textured. Sure, your armored vehicle looks completely unrealistic what with looking like there's absolutely no room for the crew that would be needed to pilot it, but beyond that, it looks great. Not only do you have the playing field drawn beautifully, you've also got the background and scenery given the same level of detail. Typically in games like these, those areas are more of an afterthought, but here they're granted just as much attention as everything else.
To complement the visual aesthetic of the game, you've got great audio as well. The sound effects are top notch with the gun effects being particularly satisfying. Each blast shoots off with a satisfying boom and explodes with a larger and even more powerful blast. You've also got some voice-overs that, while redundant and repetitive after some time, still manage to add a lot to the feel of the game.
But more than looking and sounding great, the game plays great as well. As a mobile artillery platform, you're not going to be firing shots directly at targets. Rather, you have to control the angle of your shots in order to arc your attacks towards the baddies. And you have to do it -just- right in order to score a direct hit. Fortunately, you've got unlimited ammunition, with the only real barrier being how often you can fire before needing to reload. In earlier levels with nothing firing back at you this isn't really much of a problem. Later on though, you have to practice getting direct hits and improved accuracy or you'll soon be swamped by the number of baddies out for your blood.
A good point though is that you can upgrade you artillery platform as you progress. You can get better guns, better armor, greater range, etc... In order to get these, you need to do well on your missions, and the more of these you get, the better you'll do on your missions. One thing to keep in mind is that as an artillery platform, you're not exactly a fast-moving skirmisher. You're a tank that takes damage and dishes it out and you should play as such. Sure, you'll take damage, but for the most part, it's not a bad idea to wade through enemy fire blasting the scrap out of everything in your way. If nothing else, it's extremely therapeutic.
