Games with interesting mechanics are always fun. They bring something new to the table and provide you with a new experience without getting in your face about it. Randobot is such a game and it is amazing.

First off, Randobot looks pretty much like a simple platformer. While it does indeed play like one, it has interesting mechanics that make for some neat gameplay effects. But first, let's look at how it looks.

The game is not quite anything too snazzy, but the graphics are decent. The levels are nicely done and fairly detailed giving great atmosphere to the game. What's more, the characters are nicely animated, with all the robots articulated and moving well. Sure, the graphics could be better, but they work. Likewise, the audio isn't anything special and certainly nothing to write home about, but it works for the game. You do have a wide variety of sounds though, so you won't be getting bored any time soon.

What's really interesting is how the game plays. The story starts out with a defective robot being sent out into the field. As the robot is defective, it doesn't quite function as well as it should. This translates into the game as having certain actions failing. At the start of each level, you're presented with a list of the robot's abilities. The abilities include moving left and right, jumping, crouching, shooting, and jet-pack-ing. Each of these abilities has a percent chance to fail outright or to do the opposite of what you intend. Instead of jumping for instance, the robot could simply fail to do so. While that's harmless, there are more dangerous effects such as jumping left into a chasm when you intended to go right onto a ledge.

This can be remedied by collecting powerups in-game. These enable you to purchase improvements to the different abilities which lower their chance of failing. This way, you're soon able to get a robot that works as it should without the random malfunctions. The game doesn't simply rely on this gimmick though, as the levels are well-designed and provide ample challenge for the avid platformer. Exploration is rewarded, puzzles abound, and none of the levels are too difficult to solve. For the most part, most do require some thought, but none are so bad as to be impossible for the average gamer.

So go on and give Randobot a shot, you won't regret it!
