Time to get cracking on some maverick beatdowns once more, but how it's done in this game is different compared to the previous games. You see, while there are the standard five mavericks for the first portion of the game, you only get to select one of two. Defeating that maverick will unlock the next one on its line.

For now, as is standard with these games, the easiest stage is tackled first, Blaze Heatnix. Before actually entering it though, take note of the stage analysis option. Selecting it has Alia give you an idea of what types of attacks work best in that stage. In this stage's case, ice, water, and storm attacks are most effective.

Once the maverick introduction is over with, you get to another new element...party selection! While X is forced for one slot, you have the option to select up to three additional members to join him. Any party member you don't select will not get the exp your main team does. Keep that in mind.

In case you want to ask....yes, you can play the game as solo X if you really want. I might entertain trying that out as some bonus videos after beating this game. We'll see.

Speaking of X, some of his armors were damaged in previous battles and Alia needs time to repair them, lest he have issues with dealing acceptable damage.

What armors precisely? Oh, nothing special, just his ultimate x armors from the previous games. Yes, ALL three of them.

As for that schtick about them being damaged? Alia's half right and half wrong. Wrong in the sense that, yes, you can equip any one of those three ultimate x armors right now if you want. There's no "damage" to them technically. However, much like what some select enemies possessed during Mavericks 2 endgame stages, some enemies will be flat out immune to the various ult x armor attacks.

Finally, in terms of new elements in the game, there's weapon selection. You get 15 slots to choose from any of the weapon skills from the previous three games. Think of it like Wily Tower from Mega Man: The Wily Wars. Only four people can use weapon skills though, namely X, Duo, Zero, and Copy Z.

Speaking of those four, that's the team I took into the first stage. Skill wise, the top three skills to bring in are Blizzard Wave, Ice Wave, and Storm Tornado.

As for the enemies, either Blizzard Wave or Ice Wave does a good job clearing them out. The latter costs a decent amount of WE per use right now, but you get a healthy amount of resources in this stage, both from pickups available in the stage and as some select enemy drops.

One thing to note...if you see a pair of dragons in a fight, it'd be a good idea to Ice Wave them into dust. Their attack hits everyone for a good chunk of damage (70-90) and you don't want to deal with two of those back to back like I did.

As for the bosses here...first one does around 40-55 damage to the team every time it attacks. Nothing surprising really. Storm Tornado is best for dealing damage here, though feel free to go wild with Duo Slash or Z-Cannon if the fight seems to be getting close to ending as you get a full heal after the boss folds.

As for Blaze Heatnix, it's the usual song and dance for revived mavericks. Boss thinks he can defeat X now that he's revived. Might be a bit hard to do when he's got three allies on his side. Just saying!

Oh, and his damage isn't any better than the mid boss. About the same really. Storm Tornado works just as well on him though. On the plus side, you do get a rad rendition of the boss theme from Megaman 10 to rock out to.

As for rewards...there's no weapon skills, but there is a purpose to killing bosses besides unlocking the first intermission stage. All in due time though.
