In today's episode of the "Metroid Prime" playthrough, we explore a Space Pirate frigate, learn the about the basic game mechanics and controls, fight a giant mutant parasite as the first boss, and escape from the ship before it explodes.

Samus picks up a distress signal coming from a frigate orbiting the planet Tallon IV, so being the hero that she is, she decides to check it out, only to find that the ship is in disarray and that the all of the Space Pirate crew is injured, dead, or has already fled from the ship. So it's up to us to figure out what's going on as we learn about the basic controls- how to fire the arm cannon, how to use missiles, how to use the Morph Ball, etc.
Though it doesn't take long for us to figure out what prompted an aggressive, battle-hardened group armed to the teeth like the Space Pirates to send out a distress signal for the whole region to pick up: two of their latest genetic mutants, parasite queens, broke out of their containment chambers and went on a rampage in the ship. But while the Space Pirates managed to kill one of the queens before we arrived, we encounter the other one in the ship's reactor, which serves as the game's first boss.

Despite having a solid entrance and an intimidating appearance, the parasite queen is less of a boss and more of a tutorial, what with her only attack being an energy beam that can be easily dodged by sidestepping. Furthermore, thanks to the lock-on feature, the only way the queen can dodge your blasts is if part of the shield barrier that she's hiding behind blocks it. As such, just wait for the shield to move away from the parasite queen's mouth and blast away at it with your arm cannon and missiles until you win.

But in typical "Metroid" fashion, we have to escape the ship before it explodes, during which we lose all of our gear, forcing us to start from square one as we chase Ridley, who was turned into a cyborg, down to the planet's surface.
