MiSTer FPGA - Shadowrun [Part 1] / Genesis (Mega Drive)
**PLEASE WATCH IN FULLSCREEN @ 1440p!** This version of Shadowrun is my favorite of the various releases it saw on consoles in the 90's. I'd only played the SNES version back then, as a rental, and was pretty disappointed with it. The point-and-click interface just felt cumbersome with a controller. The Genesis version is a very rare instance of an RPG that didn't release in Japan but was well-made. Looking to get into MiSTer FPGA? The beginning grind where you essentially play as a delivery boy is the weakest part of the game, with very little variety for these repeated missions. (Use the video's chapter markers to skip grind sections!) I tried to get through that as quickly as possible while letting viewers read the text from the different locations the first time visiting them. After that I just plow through full-speed and try to get to some Matrix hacking as quick as possible, since that's where the real money is!
Even with a good netrunner like Phantom, randomly searching different cyberspace locations can be a large waste of time, with a good portion of them proving inaccessible even with upgrades, until you get a better cyberdeck and upgraded deception/attack skills. A way to get around this is to take the missions offered by Mortimer just a screen to the west of the Downtown Seattle data broker. Those are low-to-mid level Matrix runs that will pretty much guarantee easy targets that you can exploit for money as you are carrying out the required missions there. I also took the time to quickly level-up Phantom's Computer skill to 6 at the Redmond Barrens. You can get the required 12 skill points in less than 10 minutes there if you just rush through the missions. Along with an upgrade to your attack program, it will make your success pretty much guaranteed in Mortimer's Matrix missions. Be sure to max-out your Cyberdeck's memory as well, since the beginning 100 is just not enough for hauling out the valuable data you'll plunder.
It took me several tries to record a run I was happy with here, that I felt had enough variety that it wasn't just a boring bunch of grinding through sections. Chapter markers should help make this a more pleasant experience as well.
This is my first video that uses the RetroTINK Slot mask, which really does an outstanding job of replicating the luminance of a CRT along with it's mask effect. It's a mask I'll probably only use in visually "noisy" games like this, due to unevenness/compression issues that are more apparent in games with large flat-colored sections, and when downscaled to 1080p.
