MiSTer FPGA - Chrono Cross [Part 2] / PlayStation
*PLEASE WATCH IN HIGHEST QUALITY 1440p!* This project started nearly a year ago when I saw the "remaster" and how bad the AI upscaled backgrounds look. I couldn't record this because of excessive noise at 1080p so am returning to try again with my recent upgrade to 1440p encoding. Visuals are tuned to component on a consumer Trinitron. Please enjoy! Pt. 1: • MiSTer FPGA - Chrono Cross [Part 1]... Looking to get into MiSTer FPGA? Great quality kits, parts & support at https://www.MiSTerAddons.com
Visuals will be a bit dark, which some folks won't mind, though if you would like to improve things a bit, a local brightness boost of ~15-20% will be necessary. You can also try one of MiSTer's newly-added HDR options with these settings to help brightness, but I cannot vouch for how well those work, nor can I record videos with those options. When I boost brightness on my monitor with these settings, the image is mostly indistinguishable from my consumer Trinitron CRT. These settings are made with a normal viewing distance in mind. People who sit 2 inches away from their displays might prefer softer interpolation here, but I chose these settings to retain as much detail in the backgrounds as possible. Ideal sitting distance can be found by observing text. Scanlines should be just barely visible with only a somewhat "wavy" look to the outer edges of the text.
This was a day-1 purchase for me when it released originally, and I can still remember seeing the awesome intro FMV and gameplay previews along with that lovely underwater title sequence before jumping into this odd adventure. The beginning is edited to show all 4 underwater title animation scenes before starting.
I stumbled upon some combination of starting events that leaves Serge much weaker early-on, which is a nice change of pace in this game given how easy it generally is. There is no need to grind or go out of your way for power-ups most of the time here. It's more about the story, which is a bit polarizing in itself. Can you figure out what causes this early nerf? It's undocumented as far as I can tell, and I only stumbled upon it by starting over dozens of times for practice runs. Taking the path I do in this video, it occurred several times.

None of this would be possible without the constant hard work of Sorgelig. It cannot be overstated how much he has done and continues to do for this project, since its beginning. You can support him either at his Patreon in the link below, or on Paypal, depending on your preference. MiSTer is a paradigm shift in how we can experience these classic games. This is a long-term preservation project that will continue to grow so that gamers today and in the future can experience these excellent systems as accurately and lag-free as possible. Donating what you can will help keep the updates coming. Thank you.
