MiSTer FPGA - Ys Book II (イース II) / TurboGrafx CD (PC Engine CD)
*PLEASE WATCH IN FULLSCREEN 1080p/60 QUALITY.* Continued @10:00 from my video of Ys Book I: • MiSTer FPGA - Ys Book I (イース I) / Tur...
This one certainly has some rough edges like the ridiculous "two goons one chest" schtick at the beginning, and repeated backtracking sections later on, but it's still a classic. The backtracking isn't so bad with such a rocking soundtrack accompanying you! Looking to get into MiSTer FPGA? Great quality kits, parts & support at https://www.MiSTerAddons.com
Like in Ys Book I, I wrote up my own guide to get through this one. This was especially necessary for the last dungeon, Solomon Shrine. The mines at the beginning can seem pretty confusing at first, but there is some structure to the way it's laid out. Generally if you get lost, you can take the center door in rooms that branch off in three different ways, to get back to the start. Left side doors generally lead to shrines, which are easy to pick out because of the ornate doors leading to them. Right side paths generally lead to items (pickaxe & Magic of Fire), Dr. Flair and the boss fight leading to the lower levels. One small thing that can help to memorize the areas, especially later on In Solomon Shrine, is pressing Select on the Status screen, which will enable a pop-up box that shows your current location name when you enter a new screen. With how similar a lot of the Shrine areas look, this can be very helpful in keeping your bearings and knowing where you've searched before.
Boss fights are a mixed bag in this one, with many of them made overly easy with the inclusion of fire magic here. Fighting in general is much easier in Ys II because of the combination of fire magic and the Hawk/Falcon Idols you get soon into the game. The final boss encounter can be frustrating though, as it has a lot of randomness to where the boss will teleport to, sometimes making it feel impossible to take him out without dying, depending on the pattern he has. If he teleports to the opposite side of the screen from you, its generally best to just wait in the center while dodging meteors, until he teleports closer. Also, try not to fight near the top of the screen. You have to take him out pretty quick since the Shield magic drains your MP rapidly, adding pressure.
Be sure to check out the awesome Ys I & II anime OVA's, an 11-part series.
MiSTer's PC Engine core was transformed into the most accurate way to play this console besides original hardware, largely in part thanks to efforts by srg320. He also created our SNES, Sega CD and Sega 32x cores, and is currently working on a Sega Saturn core for MiSTer.

None of this would be possible without the constant hard work of Sorgelig. It cannot be overstated how much he has done and continues to do for this project, since its beginning. You can support him either at his Patreon in the link below, or on Paypal, depending on your preference. MiSTer is a paradigm shift in how we can experience these classic games. This is a long-term preservation project that will continue to grow so that gamers today and in the future can experience these excellent systems as accurately and lag-free as possible.
