Moral Panics: They Suck!
53Did I use this video as an excuse to talk about Mortal Kombat fatalities? Well you can't prove that's the case either way, but I did enjoy taking a look at a topic that's a little bit outside of the scope of what we've been talking about the last few videos. So come and enjoy my attempt to create a moral panic about moral panics.
In the video I go over the typical structure of a moral panic and how it's related to press dynamics. Then I go over some specific examples, including, but not limited to: The Mass Effect moral panic, The Mortal Kombat moral panic, the very first video game moral panic, the red scare and the Islamophobic moral panic that came with the Trojan Horse scandal in the UK. Finally I take a moment to think about who benefits from moral panics and how they're a mechanism for small-c conservatives to assert their control over the cultural and political spaces we inhabit.
