Murphy Models MM7078 | GM 071 Class Diesel Locomotive | 078 Iarnrod Eireann Grey | OO Gauge | Review
This is a in-depth review of the Murphy Models EMD GM 071 Class Diesel Locomotive in the new Iarnrod Eireann freight livery that is a limited edition model of only just 250 pieces produced worldwide. This one is numbered as 078 as I got this for my birthday as my big day is in the first week of June. This is a very well made and presented model from Murphy as the model does have several separately fitted etched parts as well as the model is DCC sound ready as the model has a 4ohm speaker pre-installed and has a 21 pin interface. There is directional working lights and the model has all-wheel drive with a central can motor as well as a heavy diecast metal chassis that gives the model enough weight to haul a reasonable sized train. I used the Gaugemaster Model D train controller for this model during the test run on the dynamos and the test loop with a load. The performance and the handling is excellent all around not to forget that this model does have working cab lights under DCC mode as this is a separate function that can only be used via a suitable decoder. Murphy Models do make their own sound decoders for these model locomotives and I will make the effort of adding a sound decoder into the model at a later time. Being Irish-descent myself, its only right that I should make a big effort to build up on my Irish model train fleet. If you are into Irish railways or want something different in your fleet, I would certainly recommend getting one of this models for your model railway layout as it is a cracking model and it seemed to fit in well on the test train which was random freight stock of Hornby and Bachmann wagons.
