17You gotta love those folks over at Exact; they easily released some of the best exclusives for the Sharp X68000. What's that? Who's Exact!? Why, only one of the best underground game development companies of all time!

Well, okay, that might be a bit of a stretch, but they're definitely one of my favorite lesser-known developers, having not released one bad game during their roughly ten year stint in the gaming world, but they were particularly proficient at tapping into the Sharp's power and always had a love affair for wireframes and polygons. They are best known for their "Jumping Flash!" series for Sony's Playstation (barring the last game, "Robbit mon Dieu", which was handed over to "Sugar & Rockets") and "Ghost in the Shell", but they were good at creating games from day one. Naious won't win any awards for originality, presentation or design, but it is an all-around great horizontal shmup that's a few parts Thunder Force, a few parts Gradius, a little bit of Whip Rush, a wee bit of Thundercross, and it's hard as balls to play!
As Exact's first game, and given it was released in 1990, it stands with some of the better shooters of the time, but it is not for the faint of heart... there are obstacles everywhere, traps, screen scrolling of doom, and power-ups that don't come from enemies but, instead, are strategically placed on levels (almost always in hazardous places) and require you to really earn them. You can also get four different types of optional assistants that have different movement and firing patterns, which all have their practical applications. Dying will make you lose the weapon you have equipped as well as your options, but at least you don't lose all your weapons at once, but the game definitely requires familiarity and memorization to even remotely stand a chance. If you are skilled enough to persevere, you will be rewarded with some good graphics with nice parallax scrolling, cool music and gain immense firepower as you can upgrade weapons by collecting more than one of the same type, but that's all easier said than done!
The game has a little bit of plot: In 21st and 22nd century, the Earth became overpopulated and toxic from pollution, so humans began colonizing space , greatly advancing their technology in the process. They first uncover the secrets of Mars where various machines beyond comprehension are found (and spend more than fifteen years in the process trying to reverse engineer them), then they find habitable pockets of Jupiter to colonize as a temporary home, then later confirm the existence of extraterrestrial life, and finally create a civilized society with the goal of reclaiming the Earth and making it inhabitable again. To do this, they create an advanced artificial intelligence named "Naious" to slowly clean up the atmosphere, but it eventually becomes sentient and decides to wipe out all of humanity instead. Using the best aircraft space money can buy, the ASP, you're off to stop Naious and the various machines it has turned against mankind before it destroys everything.
