0OverRider is an exciting new roguelike beat 'em up that offers a fresh and unique twist on the genre. The standout feature is the ability to possess any enemy you defeat and use their moveset, turning every enemy into a potential playable character. This opens up a lot of creative possibilities for combat, as you can experiment with different abilities and playstyles.
The game includes a progression system where you level up enemies by inhabiting them and fulfilling their specific requests, unlocking stat boosts, new moves, and additional abilities. The roguelike mechanics blend standard per-run upgrades with metaprogression tied to enemy upgrades and stats. There's also a workshop where you can craft parts to meet surgery requests, adding another layer of depth to the experience.
Runs typically last 15 - 25 minutes, offering plenty of room for diverse builds and challenging, but generally fair, gameplay. However, there are some rough spots, such as excessive screen shake, occasional performance issues, and bugs that can interrupt the flow. The process of switching between enemies is fun, but the balance is a bit off, as some enemies are clearly more powerful than others, making certain strategies less viable.
Despite these issues, OverRider has an incredibly strong foundation. It's one of the most fun and unique action roguelikes I’ve played this year, and with future updates to address the bugs and polish, it has the potential to become a standout title. Enjoy the video!
