Nexomon (2017, STEAM Gameplay, Early Access 2020)
3Nexomon is a Pokemon-like game created by VEWO Interactive Inc. that went into early access on STEAM late 2019. The game was initially released in 2017 for Android and iOS, it had micro-transactions for those versions but those were removed for the PC release.
I'm going to start by saying i'm NOT really a fan of the Pokemon games, though I don't mind the animated series, so when I decided to try this out I wasn't expecting to like it so much.
The graphics are just great, very vibrant and colorful and all HD for the PC release. The music and sound effects are all great and suit the game, along with the battle and skill animations.
Each Nexomon has a nice amount of skills they learn at various levels that you set to use, each with their own attack animation. There are a total of 309 Nexomon to catch, train and evolve twice, so three forms available for each.
There's a story that you follow through the game that seems to be well thought out, even cut scenes with voice-overs every so often. The story is told from a narrator's story telling point of view which is great.
I found the first hour of the game to be relatively easy but think it will no doubt get harder as you progress, i've read that there are Nexomon Trainers that use level 90-99 Nexomon in battles so those are probably a tough challenge.
Of what I have played.. if I was going to rate this game out of 10.. i'd give it an 8 or 9, BUT.. to me it's missing one simple thing that I like in my rpg games, side-quests, if it had those then this game would easily score 9, possibly a 10.
You might say.. "it's a Pokemon clone, it's not meant to have side-quests", well.. why not break from the mold? become your own game, flesh out the game with even more deeper connections with NPCs and the Nexomon. Give players a break from the grind to do something else.
Either way, this game is just great, I really like it and will continue to play it now it's in my STEAM Library to play, in fact.. I played for another couple of hours after recording this video. I just hope maybe the developers will catch wind of my side-quests idea and add them in, as it's still in Early Access.
