This is an exploit that I wouldn't be surprised if it got patched, but in the meantime, it can definitely be used to extend your vocabulary of alien languages. It is a relatively quick and very easy way to learn new words. If you want to get the "Babel-17", "The Languages of Pao", and "Citizen of the Galaxy" trophies out of the way quickly, this is definitely one way to do it.

Now, due to the fact that I have only encountered the Gek race, I don't know if it will work with the other races as well. If someone could let me know if it does or not, I will update the description stating thus.

First off, you need to find yourself a trader. Specifically, one that you can actually see. You won't get the necessary dialogue options if you speak to a trader that is sitting in their ship. You will most likely have an introductory meeting with them on your first visit. After that, the exploit can begin.

At this point you will need to give the trader 20 Carbon. Once you do, you will be given 3 dialogue options. These options alternate between 2 preset groups of choices. Both of the preset groups may or may not switch out an option or two each time it alternates to them. But the most important thing is that one of the 2 presets ALWAYS (at least it did for me) contained the option to "Request New Word".

This is where the "Exploit" comes in. Now, I'm not entirely sure how the whole "Standing" thing works, but as long as you are on friendly terms with the race you should be able to request the word (by default upon encountering the Gek for the first time I was able to choose the lowest option, which is where the "Request New Word" appears). In my case, my "Standing" says "Partner", but I am able to make the "Best Friend" request. On the dialogue preset OPPOSITE the one that allows you to learn a new word, you can commonly see the "Request Isotope" or "Request Fuel" options for the "Best Friend" request. Both of these options will reward you with 100 Carbon. Since it costs you 20 Carbon to open a dialogue each time, receiving 100 Carbon gives you 5 free extra dialogue attempts *(Seems there might be other factors at work that may alter the amount of Carbon you receive*). My luck was good enough that I never ran out of Carbon doing this because one of the two Carbon options popped up enough that I never ran out. I started with 200 - 300 Carbon, and after about 45 minutes of doing this, I had well over 3000 Carbon.

As long as you can request the word, it shouldn't be too difficult to "Mine" the Carbon needed. Since it is commonly found in plant-life, that stuff is everywhere.

If you might be thinking of using this to make credits, I wouldn't recommend it. Carbon doesn't have a great selling price (or maybe it does elsewhere, I have no idea). There is sometimes an option to "Request Credits" on the same preset as "Request New Word", but it only gave me just a little under 2000 Units. There are much better ways of earning credits than this. Just saying.

If you back out of the conversation without picking an option, not only will you have to pay the 20 Carbon AGAIN (I checked), but the dialogue options will NOT have changed. You need to pick something to make the options rotate to the next set.

And with this, you will be a "Citizen of the Galaxy" in no time. Happy exploring!
