On Her Majesty's Secret Service Book review
There is a lot to say about this book, and just as much as the movie adaptation. I think the first reason why is because of the length of both. Yet somehow both don't feel like they are long stories, which has always impressed me. The second, is that somehow the beats of the story are the same in both, but the details vary widely. Third, is how both are presented very beautifully in their respective mediums.
As for things I somehow missed. In the book Draco is described as coming for Corsica, and even speaks the language of the area. In the movie Draco also speaks Corsican to stop the braying on the door. I also love the detail in the book that Bond is able to spot Draco's former employees. Other than that, the movie clips I showed for reference were all captured on Laser Disc. As for the bizarre lines on the T.V. it had something to do with the V-hold. I could adjust it so the lines would disappear but then the picture would jump. Crazy thing is I've experienced this as well with DVDs. Perhaps it's the way the video is coded to the disc. Last thing to mention, I consider this to be a Christmas movie. It's been a tradition for a few years now to watch this movie on Laser Disc in December. There is something really interesting about Laser Disc quality. It's almost like watching a Brand new VHS tape, but were VHS degrades over time, if you have a good laser disc the picture stays as good as Day 1 VHS. I think what also makes it different is that it was before films were remastered. Sometimes I find remastering messes with the colors, then again it could be the film aging from that time. Here it's closer to the original film print. I hope you will join me next time for "The Man with the Golden Gun"
