Original Super Mario Bros 3 Unlimited Lives Exploit On NES
107Super Mario Bros 3 is one of the greatest games, not just on the original Nintendo Entertainment System, but of all time. I mean the game had a full-length motion picture commercial for it in the Wizard starting Fred Savage! While the NES version is fantastic, I recently discovered that for the Super Nintendo version of Super Mario All-Stars, there's an unlimited lives hack that I had to check out.
I initially started testing on my Nintendo Switch, specifically on the NES-online version of SMB3. I got to level 3-3 where the hack takes place, went through the level, lured the Lakitu back to where he needed to be, but I couldn't pull off the hack! See, the hack relies on the Spineys that Lakitu throws at you to bounce off the pipe with the Pirana Plant just right, but the geometry isn't correct in the NES version. I wasn't expecting this, so I was off to the SNES Online version of Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario 3.
It took be about 25-30 minutes to get to the right part of the level, and once again I got the hack setup. I lured Lakitu back to the right spot, grabbed a Koopa Troopa Shell, and tossed it at the blocks while standing on the 2 blocks of safety and well there were 200 points. Then 400. 800. 1000. 2000. 1Up. 1up. 1UP! WUT?!?! IT WORKED! I was able to pull off the hack quickly and easily, I couldn't believe it actually worked!
It is interesting that it only works on the SNES All-Stars version and not the original, I wasn't expecting that but it goes to show that there are minor differences between the two versions regarding positions of objects, physics, and other primary characteristics of the game. The neat thing about this hack is that, as long as you have time on the timer, you can sit under the Pirana Plant Pipe and just rack up the extra lives over and over and over again.
