I know I don't always have the most popular takes on things. There are things others love that I don't, and there are things I love that make some people raise an eyebrow. I wanted to talk about one of those things I love that most people can't stand. In this Short, I'm going to take a look at Why the NES Max Controller Is One Of My Favorite Controllers Ever!

Released around the same time as the NES Advantage arcade stick, the Max was for those of us who, well, couldn't afford an NES Advantage. The NES Max ditched the design of the NES controller for the first time, instead giving players more of a grip to hold on to. It was thinner and lighter than the stock controller too, but that's not all.

Instead of a traditional D-Pad, the NES Max used this circular disc for control. In commercials, it promised better controls, better power slides, and better gaming than a D-Pad. For games like Ice Hockey and RC Pro-Am, promoted alongside the NES Max, there was something to it. The disc did change how you played, and for some, it was an improvement, for others, not so much. I, l loved it.

But the disc wasn't the only change as the NES Max also had repositioned A and B Buttons and TURBO! Sure, it wasn't as fast as on the NES Advantage, but still, TURBO! You could spam fireballs in Super Mario like it was nobody's business, and I again loved it!

I picked up my most recent NES Max for about $10 4 years ago, and then a second one about 2 years for even less. I love the fit and feel of it still to this day, but can't help but wonder what a regular D-Pad would feel like.

Did you ever have an NES Max? What about an NES Advantage? Let me know down in the comments what controller you like that you think others didn't.
