The Best Retro Video Game Start Up Menu Sounds For Gen Xers
One of the reasons that retro video games are such a draw for many people is the nostalgia for different points in their lives. For many people, getting a certain video game system marked an important time in their life. A first real job. Completing college, moving out on your own. For me, gaming was a way to relax after a hard day at work. One of the cool things about systems released after 2001 was the fact that you had additional startup audio and menus on the systems. Sure, the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast both had their own menus, but with the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube eras the major players all had startup menu systems. Let's take a look at the three major players and how I would rank the Best Retro Video Game Start Up Menu Sounds.
Number Three
Original Xbox
I was not a major fan of the original Xbox controller, and that is why I didn't play a whole lot of the system back in the day. I will admit that the startup menu and everything is pretty cool, it's pretty aggressive and it's full of testosterone. That being said, I have zero nostalgia for it and just appreciate it now in the present day.
Number two
Sony PlayStation 2
I played a ton of the PlayStation 2, from Gran Turismo to Ratchet & Clank and more. The startup menu was very serene to me, it wasn't as ostentatious as the Xbox but it also wasn't as catchy to me as the number one which we will talk about in a moment. I think the best thing I can say about the PlayStation 2 startup sound is that it is iconic.
Number one
Nintendo GameCube
Yes, I'm a Nintendo fanboy, but I also love the startup sound of the GameCube. Add in the fact that you can actually tweak the different startup sounds depending on if you hold different buttons on the controllers or if you hold different buttons on four controllers. The GameCube startup menu is my favorite of this generation, and while I did not have a GameCube at launch it was not too far afterward. This is probably the system I got closest to launch before actually getting a launch day console, and it defined my era of gaming for my early twenties. I loved Luigi's Mansion, Rogue Squadron, and even Mario Sunshine.
Let me know what you think of these startup menus. Which is your favorite? Which is your least favorite?
