Wait, There Are Continues In The Original NES Super Mario Bros?! WUT?!
97One game that has always had my number has been the original Super Mario Bros on the NES, Nintendo Entertainment System. It doesn't matter if we're talking about the PlayChoice 10 version, the NES Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt Version, or the NES Online version on the Nintendo Switch, this is one classic game that has ALWAYS had my number. One of the reasons why is that once you run out of lives there aren't any continues. Or at least that's what I thought. What if I told you there WERE actually continues in the original Super Mario Bros game for the NES? Yeah, I felt cheated when I found out too!!
This doesn't require any complicated code like the Konami Code or anything along those lines. And, weirdly, Nintendo didn't just offer a Continue option in the menu, as easy as this is to do! But yes, all you need to do to continue is simply hit the A & Start button at the same time on the main menu and, voila, you are back in the game where you left off with a fresh set of lives.
And unless you live under a rock, you know the story of the original Super Mario Bros, but just in case, here's a history lesson for you (from the original instruction booklet):
One day the kingdom of the peaceful mushroom people was invaded by the Koopa, a tribe of turtles famous for their black magic. The quiet, peace-loving Mushroom People were turned into mere stones, bricks and even field horsehair plants, and the Mushroom Kingdom fell into ruin.
The only one who can undo the magic spell on the Mushroom People and return them to their normal selves is the Princess Toadstool, the daughter of the Mushroom King. Unfortunately, she is presently in the hands of Bowser, the King of the Koopa.
Mario hears about the Mushroom People’s plight and sets out on a quest to free the Mushroom Princess from the evil Koopa and restore the fallen kingdom of the Mushroom People.
You are Mario! It’s up to you to save the Mushroom People from the black magic of the Koopa!
