Score Super Mario Bros Maximum Coins & Flag Bonus in World 4-1
There are so many great ways to get maximum points in old video games coming to light. Sometimes one of the biggest tips is to slow down and not rush, as then you can double up on rewards. One such trick happens at the end of World 4-1 in the original Super Mario Bros on the Nintendo Entertainment System. There's a coin block at the base of the flagpole, and often players compromise whether to get the coins or max out on the flagpole bonus. But what if you didn't need to compromise and could actually do both? Well, that's what I'm going to show you, how to Score Super Mario Bros Maximum Coins & Flag Bonus in World 4-1.
Due to the number of people that beat Super Mario Bros using the Warp Zones, often level 4-1 is the third level players get to. It's a fairly straight-forward level with average difficulty. The main thing is to avoid the Lakitu throwing Spinys through the entire level. As such, you're often better off trying to speed run this level, skipping past obstacles and zipping to the end as quickly as possible. Because of this, often players don't have much of a chance to pad their score or add coins to try to get another extra life, but there is a way at the very end to do just that.
To pull off the double score, you must leave enough room on the left-hand side of the screen to ensure you can get maximum speed with Mario. Drop down into the pit and start collecting the coins from the coin box. Once complete, jump up on the left side of the coin block, inching slowly to the right to gain enough running speed to make your big jump. Hold down B to run while jumping to the left, and you should be able to make it back to the top of the blocks. If you have done this properly, you'll be able to run and jump and reach the top of the flagpole, maxing out both your coins from the coin box and the score from the flagpole.
This technique works on the NES Version, NES Classic, NES Online on the Nintendo Switch, and even the PlayChoice 10 Arcade port. Did you know about this technique? Have you practiced this maneuver yourself? Share your thoughts in the comments!
