WAIT?! Throw Fireballs as Small Mario In the Super Mario Bros?!
85Wouldn't it be cool if you could play as small Mario in the original Super Mario Bros and still be able to throw fireflower fireballs? While it may seem impossible, you CAN actually do it, and I'm going to show you exactly how you can throw fireballs as Small Mario in the original NES Version of Super Mario Bros using the NES Online version of Super Mario Bros on the Nintendo Switch.
To pull this off, you have to be either Super Mario or Fire Flower Mario. The trick itself is performed as you are in the castles at the end of any of the levels and prepared to take on Bowser at the end of one of the levels. The key to pulling off this trick is you have to touch both the ax to retract the bridge and Bowser at the same time to essentially initialize the end of the level and take damage yourself. If you do it correctly, Mario will glide versus walk to the Toad Container at the end of the level. He'll also be flashing as if he had taken damage but he will be large, Super Mario.
From here at the start of the next level grab the very first power up that you would reach. Even though you start the level as Super Mario what happens is a power-up mushroom comes out of the block. When you grab this power mushroom, it reduces your size back down to standard-size Mario instead of making you super-sized, as you're already super-sized! It's all good, continue through the level and grab a fire flower at the first chance you can. When you grab the fire flower you now become small Fire Flower Mario!!
One of the interesting things about this is when you do it correctly, Mario increases size temporarily when you shoot a fireball, but once he's done he goes back down to his original small size. It's an interesting exploit and one that I've wanted to try to capture for some time.
