Digital sound and music, detailed and expressive creatures, fanciful terrain, and one of the most unique player characters out there! I'd say we're into the golden age of DOS platformers. Still 16-color EGA graphics, unfortunately, but they're used effectively enough that the limited color depth doesn't call attention to itself.

Cosmo can jump on most enemies to attack, in the style of a Mario, and getting enough bounces without touching the ground even gives sizable bonuses. He also gets bombs that can blast certain obstacles and destroy some creatures that aren't affected by anything else, like those eyestalk plants that also refund the bomb. Destroy all of those on a stage for another extra bonus! Additionally, Cosmo's suction cup hands can cling to most vertical walls, giving him extra mobility.

Stages are grouped into thematically-similar pairs, and at the end of each pair of stages, the stars that Cosmo collected across both are tallied to determine eligibility for a bonus stage. Bonus stages come in two or three different types, depending on the star total. There's no life system, so this is purely for extra points and fun.

Can Cosmo find out what happened to his parents and save them before it's too late? Not in episode one, at least. As was standard at the time, Cosmo was released as a three-part series, with only the first part freely distributed as shareware. I do remember there being a boss at the end of the episode, though, followed by a dramatic cliffhanger ending, and the usual nag screen exhorting you to register to find out what happens next!
