Pinball FX 2 VR Review
From the makers of Zen Pinball at Zen Studios, Pinball FX2 takes the long-awaited leap into virtual reality. The starter app comes with 3 imaginary tables that cover a broad spectrum of fun and interesting features. The machines aren't entirely realistic though, sometimes animated characters will move balls or the physics might change to low gravity, but they also do a fine representation of traditional pinball mechanics. The tables may be a bit easier than the ones found on Farsight Studio's Arcade Pinball, but they all have a nice balance of simple and complexity, that noobs and veterans can both appreciate. The nudge mechanics work well even though the tilt sensor is a little sensitive. In VR, having good control is about manipulating your head position. The best place to be for an exciting and clear view of the field is a child's or sit down position. The only was I was to achieve this was to stand up, hold down the calibration button, and sit down at the table. I really wish their would patch in a seat adjustment. No doubt there's going to be alot of peeved customers who have neck cramps if they're trying playing it from the tall man default cam.
Not only does the height make your neck hurt, the playfield can look unclear and fuzzy, like the rails and the lights. There's a nice central hub where you can choose what machines you'd like to purchase for your room, online leaderboards which include a superscore, and a trophy cabinet with table goals, which could have been bigger, since there is a lot more do on each of the tables. My only other complaint is that I would like to have played the Non-VR version also, which wasn't included. Overall, Pinball FX2 VR is slick well-rounded starter kit for virtual pinball enthusiasts, just as long as you can calibrate your preferred head position. Were you able to dial into virtual pinball?
