Resogun is a side scrolling shooter released on PS4 in 2013 and developed by Housemarque. The gameplay borrows ideas from 1981's Defender and expand it with several new features. You rescue humans by picking them up and dropping them in the safety zone. You'll be rewarded with extra lives, extra bombs, points, or a shield for every human saved. There are 5 levels that last about 6 minutes each, that are broken up into 3 phases plus a boss fight. The levels can be played on 5 difficulties and there are 100s of challenges and feats to conquer. Not to mentions there's 3 different guns for you to choose on loadout, and you can even balances the stats between boost, overdrive, and agility.
The ships moves with the left stick and shoots with the right. You can also shoot with the buttons but the stick is way better. The triggers do things like boost, overdrive, bombs, and toss humans. If you wanna go pro at Resogun, you really need to master the art of boosting through enemies. The controls in this game are tippy top, they feel so good, even someone with little video game experience can jump in and be absorbed.
Resogun is incredibly impressive looking, and it never distracts from gameplay. It's easy to see where everything's going. The audio cues are also helpful and the soundtrack does exactly what it should. The cylindrical layout of the levels was great idea because you see the whole map by looking into the background. If the weekly events aren't enough, you can try one of the DLCs. Each comes with two game variations that add new twists and challenges to the original game. Resogun has local and online multiplayer and leaderboards, and it's all integrated smoothly, even with less than optimal connections.
