Pocket Fighter [ポケットファイター] Game Sample - WonderSwan
Original Air Date: June 29th, 2009
This is a pretty uncommon game for the B&W WonderSwan (note that this is also a Japan-Only handheld. We own a SwanCrystal)... I'll never know what tempted so many competitors to launch handhelds back in the mid-late ninties in B&W, but oh well. This is a decent and surprising adaptation of the (under-appreciated?) fighter from the arcades, Playstation, Saturn, etc. The fighting is left intact (though the controls are a bit sluggish, as is the fighting, and there's no combo-counter) and there's also a number of new elements added exclusively to the WS game, like card battling and extra character-specific unlockables.
It's OK, but it further makes me appreciate the NGPC and its assortment of great handheld fighting games. I think too much was crammed into this B&W game, though what's availabe is fairly impressive, particularly some of the character animations and WS music. If it was made for the WSC or SC, it could have taken complete advantage of the the color hardware. You only need to look at the FF titles, Makai Toushi SaGa and games like Riviera to see what could have been done. Enjoy.
Note: Flickering text after fights is the result of the emulator, Oswan. It's not something that would happen like this on ordinary hardware, but seeing the game otherwise would be an ordeal to say the least. Glitching is otherwise towards the minimum. Ummhmm.
