I enter Pastoria City's Gym, which is a Water-type Gym, so having Grass or Electric-type Pokémon, or both as Water-type Pokémon do have a lot of different type combinations. The Gym Leader is Crasher Wake, and he is a very tough Gym Leader, but we'll see how well I do against his team of powerful Water-type Pokémon.

As for the rest of the description, I recommend watching the full video before reading past this point of the description

Pastoria Gym specializes in Water-type Pokémon, Electric or Grass-type Pokémon are your best to use for this, some examples are Roselia or Luxio, you can find Roselia in Route 212, otherwise you can teach Thunderbolt to some Pokémon that can learn it. Some of the Trainers in this Gym have Pokémon with some TM moves, like Iron Tail on Buizel, one Trainer has a Wingull with Aerial Ace, and one has a Gyarados with Scald, Whirlpool, and Substitute.
What you have to do is press the switches to change the water level so you can progress through the Gym, and when you have got through it, you can fight Crasher Wake, and one thing to note, you can actually fight Crasher Wake before fighting Maylene, so you can fight him as the third Gym Leader, even though he's really the fourth, in Platinum, you have to fight Maylene in order to fight Wake, because Barry will be blocking the entrance before then. Here is Wake's team, he has some tough Water-type Pokémon with him.
Gyarados: Brine, Ice Fang, Crunch, Flail (Wide Lens)
Quagsire: Rain Dance, Haze, Mud Shot, Scald (Damp Rock)
Floatzel: Brine, Ice Fang, Bite, Aqua Jet (Sitrus Berry)

Even though you can beat Gyarados with an Electric-type move and Quagsire with a Grass-type move, if you don't have them, just use your best moves against them. Gyarados has a Wide Lens to ensure Ice Fang will always hit, and its Flail can hurt if its HP is very low, Quagsire has a Damp Rock to extend the duration of Rain Dance to 8 turns, and that will benefit Floatzel, which has Swift Swim, so it can outspeed anything on your team. Floatzel has Ice Fang to deal with any Grass-types you might use against it, and it is fast, but the good thing is Floatzel isn't that defensive, so using your Electric or Grass-type moves, or your best attacks can get Floatzel down, and it does have Brine, which deals double damage if your Pokémon's HP is below half, and it even be powered up by the rain if Quagsire has set it up.
After beating Crasher Wake, he awards the Fen Badge, which allows us to use Defog outside of battle, some Stickers, and TMs for Brine, which is a good Water-type move to teach to any Water-type Pokémon you are using.
When you leave the Gym, interact with the Galactic Grunt and he will run away, and after the second time, Barry shows up and challenges you to a battle, and he has the same team as back in Hearthome City, and he still hasn't even evolved his Starly yet, that thing is 12 levels past its evolution level. Here is his team and moves, and his Pokémon do have held items.
Starly: Quick Attack, Double Team, Endeavor, Pluck (Quick Claw)
Roselia: Poison Sting, Mega Drain, Sweet Scent, Grass Knot (Miracle Seed)
Ponyta: Tackle, Tail Whip, Agility, Flame Wheel (Shell Bell)
Buizel: Tail Whip, Bite, Swift, Aqua Jet (Sea Incense)
Grotle: Razor Leaf, Bite, Mega Drain, Stealth Rock (Miracle Seed)
Monferno: Mach Punch, Leer, Power-Up Punch, Flame Wheel (Shell Bell)
Prinplup: Metal Claw, Charm, Bubble Beam, Grass Knot (Sea Incense)

His Grass-type has a Miracle Seed, his Fire-type has a Shell Bell, and his Water-type has a Sea Incense, and while Quick Claw is a questionable item for his Starly, it might be to give it a chance to use Endeavor or Double Team right away, and it does have that Endeavor and Quick Attack combo which can be dangerous if Starly somehow survives an attack at low HP, but aside from that, his team shouldn't be too difficult, it's the same team back in Hearthome City, but he's gained some levels.
In Platinum, you would fight Barry before fighting Crasher Wake, and he does have Staravia in that fight, and we do get some moments where Barry refers to Crasher Wake as his master, despite Wake not re-calling ever taking Barry in as an apprentice, and also in Platinum, when you talk to Dawn or Lucas before entering Veilstone Gym, you would encounter Crasher Wake there.
