First and incidentally also the hardest battle against Team Magma's leader Maxie, fought on Mt Chimney.

Maxie (as would his counterpart in Archie if playing Alpha Sapphire) is actually as hard as any gym leader at this point, probably tougher, and harder still due to not being restricted by a single typing. The 2nd battle against him has always been easier in comparison, with his Pokemon's movesets being defined by their level (always the last four moves learnt), as if he had caught them all in the wild (including Crobat), and they just didn't bother ensuring they all had powerful moves 2nd time around.

Compare for example his Camerupt with Lava Plume and Earth Power in the first battle and the same Camerupt going Mega to use... Take Down and Rock Slide against you. Such a culmination of the whole adversary thing going on eh? Nothing against Rock Slide on Mega Camerupt of course, but only when it's your secondary coverage move and not the sole potentially super-effective you have in your arsenal.

In this fight though, Maxie doesn't fuck around. His lead is the Intimidate Mightyena, weakening what is likely the player's dark-type counter (most of which are physical mons - fighting, bug and fairy types). Its moveset also shows some signs of strategy (accidental of course), namely the combination of Swagger and Assurance - the latter doubling to a 120 BP + STAB move if confusion inflicts damage the same turn (assuming the victim is faster to begin with). On the other hand, Swagger kinda contradicts Intimidate's effect, or maybe you could say Intimidate makes Swagger less risky for Mightyena - whatever.

What we're going to do here is unleash the highest-levelled wild Machop with Guts (poisoned prior to the fight), holding a Persim Berry to make Swagger work in our favour. Still, even with Guts boost + +1 atk from Swagger Machop won't be OHKOing Mightyena without a crit, so a bit of luck could be desirable (but not much). Sometimes Mightyena might Roar Machop away, suffering damage in the process. That's usually not the worst scenario to say the least.

Golbat is next, also an annoyer with Confuse Ray and Air Cutter flinching. My Pikachu Belle is back in action (for the last time in a major battle iirc). Golbat is too fast to be OHKO'd by Electro Ball, but Thunder Wave solves that problem, turning Electro Ball into a 150 BP move (actually just 120 BP now that I think about it) before STAB and the supereffective bonus.

Camerupt is the last one, a heavy-hitting tank with good coverage in fire/ground moves. It is destroyed by water-type moves, which is one good reason to choose Mudkip as your starter when playing Omega Ruby. Good water-types are otherwise hard to find, Wingull not being any fun, Marill being the other good one I guess. On a 0 exp run however, Marill's Bubblebeam does very little to Camerupt at like lv. 13, so I tank it out with Solrock whose Levitate is a real life-saver here.

Somewhere I'm supposed to switch my Amulet Coin Geodude in (Solrock usually dies before it finishes its job), but Psywave does the opposite to what I'd intended and KOs Maxie's last mon. My OCD caused me to replay the battle afterwards and then do it while getting double the money (I think I've already bought most of the things I'll ever want by this point in the challenge, what with it being No Items), but this recording is where it's at.
