We've made it to the game's first proper chapter, which is when asterisk holders from Bravely Default reappear. They do so in pairs, and you're prompted to resolve their conflict, fighting and claiming the job asterisk of the enemy you choose to side AGAINST.

The first choice is between the Thief and Red Mage jobs. For me, the choice seems clear - Red Mage (eventually) provides access to the super useful MP Free in a Pinch skill, as well as first 4 levels of Black&White magic before White/Black Mage classes become available, as well as a plethora of BP-recovery passive skills, which have frequent application in this run while PS cost isn't too high.

DeRosa (4,5K HP) is accompanied by two apprentices, each with under 1,5K HP on Hard Mode (on Normal, everybody has half their HP on Hard Mode)... Everybody keeps asking me if I'm playing on Hard, even though I stated it repeatedly beforehand - yeah, I am playing on Hard...

Since the Prologue, I've spent a bit more time learning skills now that I can freely chain enemies (and with upgraded equipment) so all my characters have, for example, Freelancer's Stand Ground for 2 PS while switching to another job (which is Charioteer for the innate Born Warrior passive). Bishop's M Def Up 20% is also useful as DeRosa likes spamming Blizzara and his apprentices also know Shining. Since Yew isn't worried about attacking (supporting everybody with Halfsies and himself with Ether instead), he equips Nikolai's Bishop Staff and ends up the most magically resistant member of the party.

Edea and Magnolia, as the slower Charioteers (Tiz is the fastest unit in the party), equip Fencer's Swordplay for Blazing Wolf, giving them a 25% phys atk buff, which should be used before they start spamming Trample. Tiz equips Halfsies instead, as we'll be relying on him to heal everyone before Tramples are used, since the move is at its most powerful when at full HP. All attackers remove shields to receive bows, the most powerful 2-handed weapon right now, with Edea getting the Mythril Bow from Ba'al Crater.

As is the case in most battles like this one, removing the mooks supporting the boss is a good idea, as that makes it harder to die to the boss. With some luck, I can kill off one apprentice on turn 1, after which Yew should keep the party alive to repeat the same with the second one (though now with Blazing Wolf and S-rank bows).

Trouble starts when Edea is charmed, unleashing all 4 of her attacks on the party and losing her chance to assault the apprentice instead, which would kill her. Now I have to worry about healing the party while giving Edea a Remedy. I also have bad luck with the game's unstable turn order, weakened Magnolia acting and using her 4x Trample before Tiz gets to heal her.

Once the second apprentice is down, we focus all attacks on the boss. With his Revenge passive, every attack supposedly has a 25% chance of giving him 1 BP. Since he doesn't mind Braving on his own too, you can easily let him get too many actions on our party, and if he's not wasting his time using inefficient actions, we could well lose everybody to that barrel of attacks. Damage Dispersion somewhat helps with the physical attacks.

And so the Red Mage asterisk is ours!

There have been some neat items to steal from bosses every now and then, but I haven't really felt like I lacked the Thief job much. There's always that Thief Knife for a weaker-yet-still-there stealing performance. Haven't ever used it up till this moment though.
