This is the last Pokémon battle video I’ll have up before the Pokémon Presents on February 27th, 2024. I’ll hold off on whatever the next team will be until I see that Pokémon Presents and I can plan accordingly based on if any new Pokémon will be made available later this year. Unlike with double battles, the uppermost echelon of the single battle ranks seems impervious to anything, with the top 7 never moving more than one spot even with a flood of new and reintroduced powerful Pokémon. Just below that, however, huge waves have been made, with 16 Pokémon new to this generation entering the top 50—and interestingly, the return of the two premier weather setters, Pelipper and Torkoal, after an extended absence out of this list. Pelipper and Torkoal returning and mingling among these Pokémon might mean the return of “weather wars,” though considering it’s been sporadic in Ranked, both single and double batlting, since it was nerfed from unlimited turns down to five turns, this will likely be something brief too.

The 18 Pokémon that are now out of the top 50 are as follows, in order of placement in the December 2023 list (the number in parentheses is that Pokémon’s January 2024 ranking): Azumarill (57th), Rotom (Wash) (58th), Corviknight (54th), Baxcalibur (60th), Scream Tail (72nd), Amoonguss (67th), Skeledirge (53rd), Kingambit (51st), Magnezone (63rd), Goodra (Hisuian) (61st), Cresselia (69th), Volcarona (66th), Iron Valiant (68th), Clodsire (62nd), Gliscor (64th), Grimmsnarl (70th), Rillaboom (52nd), and Wo-Chien (83rd). This is the first time Azumarill, Rotom Wash, and Amoonguss have been shoved off this list.

I think next time, I’ll extend this list to 75. No doubt all of the Pokémon I listed that got bumped off are still powerful, dangerous, and hard to beat. With so many Pokémon, having the list be at just 50 doesn’t give a full idea of what to expect to see competitively. (Any more than that, and I’ll have trouble fitting descriptions within the 5000 character limit.)

Type: Single Battle
Opponent: すぎもと (Sugimoto)
Battle Court: Medali (Fortune Eatery)
Music: Terapagos 2
My Pokémon: Albana (Kilowattrel), Walker (Toedscruel), Bobo (Dudunsparce)
Opponent's Pokémon: マスカーニャ (Meowscarada), ラウドボーン (Skeledirge), カイリュー (Dragonite)

Looking at my opponent’s team in Team Preview, this looks like it was assembled before any other Pokémon became available to use in Scarlet and Violet. Well, mine was too! But the music here is what plays in the final phase of the climactic battle against Terapagos. This is still a strong team though, with all of the Pokémon able to clobber the right threats and the six of them covering for each other’s shortcomings very well.

I don’t know if it was updated though. I can confirm to you that the Lokix Team WAS updated in response to Teal Mask, then again for Indigo Disk. There were not many changes, but they’re there. None of these Pokémon benefit that much from the new TMs in The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero, though I did notice the Stellar-type Terastallization could help a few of them.

Of course, since I use unconventional Pokémon, sometimes, it turns out that a strong team is stopped cold in its tracks due to something my opponent didn’t plan for. In this case, that would be a Toedscruel.

Were those Team Star sunglasses available in the base game? I feel like they weren’t available until later. I think they were tied to the Team Star tutoring sidequest that functons as an epilogue to an epilogue, of sorts.
