One of the things announced for Pokémon Presents 2024 (which, as it seems, will be nearly all updates over 2024, with Pokémon Legends: V-A for 2025) was a trio of 7-star Tera Raid Battles for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, occuring from the day after the Pokémon Presents to mid-March 2024. These three feature the Kanto starters, including a repeat of the one for Charizard, in case you missed it the first time around. (And I’ll provide a link to “Charizard the Unrivaled” at the end of this video.

First up is Venusaur, the very first fully evolved starter in National Pokédex order. Like the other Kanto starters, Bulbasaur and its evolutions have entrenched themselves in the pop culture of the world, with Ash picking up a Bulbasaur in the anime not long after the series began. He never evolved, but the players picking Bulbasaur in the Kanto games most certainly did, as were the Trading Card Game collectors and players who valued it as the first card with the Ability “Energy Trans,” which lets you shuffle around Energy cards among your Pokémon as you wish. In the video games themselves, like the other Kanto starters, Venusaur has been available in various ways by someone giving you a Bulbasaur in a lot of the main series games. Venusaur has also been an enduring part of the metagame, with its Hidden Ability of Chlorophyll pairing up amazingly well with a Pokémon with Drought as a partner, most commonly Torkoal.

Though I brought in a Cryogonal to this one, I don’t feel the certainty or confidence that I felt with previous Tera Raid Battle events due to this one having mixed results. Nevertheless, I think it’s worth showing.

Cryogonal (FrostedFlake)
Level 100
Ability: Levitate
Effort Points: 252 HP, the rest varies (this one had 180 Sp. Attack and 72 Defense)
Hold Item: Light Clay
Nature: Calm (via Mint)
Tera: Ice
Moves: Haze, Blizzard, Snowscape, Aurora Veil

As Venusaur has Chlorophyll (all 7-star Tera Raid Battle subjects have their Hidden Abilities), the battle begins with it activating Sunny Day, followed by Growth—under harsh sunlight, this move boosts Attack and Sp. Attack by 2 stages instead of just 1. Venusaur then uses Petal Blizzard, the only physical move it’ll do, but a crucial one requiring you bring a Pokémon that can take both the physical and special sides of attacking. This is where having a Cryogonal is tricky, as this one move requires spending Effort Points on Defense.

Once about 10% of the timer is gone, Venusaur will put up a barrier, which lasts for about 40% of Venusaur’s HP meter. During this time, as you’re chipping away at the barrier, Venusaur will reset your side’s stat boosts, followed by its own stat drops shortly afterwards. When either its HP or the timer are at less than 50% remaining, Venusaur will use Sunny Day again. At all other times, Venusaur can use any of its four standard moves: Giga Drain, Sludge Bomb, Earth Power, or Amnesia. In hindsight, it may not have been good to bring in a special attacker due to Amnesia’s usage.

Venusaur’s Tera type is Ground. That’s tough because Venusaur has ways of dealing with Water- and other Grass-type Pokémon. This leaves, of all things, the Ice-type as my personally recommended type to use.

Nevertheless, I do hope the Snowscape condition stopped Venusaur’s sunlight, preventing Chlorophyll from activating beyond part of the first turn; and Aurora Veil lets Cryogonal and everyone else withstand Venusaur’s attacks better.

As usual, all of Venusaur’s stats have maximum Individual Values, as well as the “Unrivaled” title if you select its mark. Though this was the first raid of this event I did, I stuck around for more, and as it stands right now, there’s a high failure rate due to people coming in unprepared, likely even more so than normal due to the Pokémon Presents bringing in people who might not have otherwise given this Venusaur event a try.
