The last Splatfest of Chill Season 2023, and the last unique event until Side Order, is…a differently themed one between Japan and everywhere else. Japanese players were asked about their favorite pastry filling, whereas non-Japanese players were asked about their favorite day of the weekend. We don’t get the pastry filling one because one of the choices is red bean paste, which sounds strange to many westerners, who don’t normally use beans in desserts. In any case, between Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, I chose Saturday because, in a standard school week or traditional office week, Saturday is the only one where no work needs to be done, unlike Friday, AND there isn’t the beginning of the school/work days looming just beyond, unlike Sunday. Looks like the majority of Splatfest-goers agreed with me, though that much is evident by the large amount of Saturday vs. Saturday matches for me.

For this Splatfest, I’ve brought in the Range Blaster. It has a longer range than the standard Blaster, as its name implies, but it also has a slower fire rate, greater ink consumption, and slower movement speed. Its range is not as long as the Rapid Blaster Pro, but unlike the latter, the Range Blaster can splat in one hit with a direct hit. Due to its drawbacks, it can’t ink very well, even though it needs a lot of ink to roam around in and refill. That means a Range Blaster is at its most effective with at least one teammate with a weapon designed to cover a lot ground and do it quickly. That also means that without that kind of mutual relationship, the Range Blaster qiuckly falters and can never recover for the rest of that match.

The basic Range Blaster comes with Suction Bombs and Wave Breaker. Together, they are also things you can fling over a short wall, making this a weapon designed around heckling opponents over ledges, kind of like a Slosher. Your throw with a Suction Bomb equals roughly the distance that ink from a Range Blaster reaches with each shot, except it deals a lot more damage and over a wider area (though, of course, consuming much more ink). I like to use these either to trap opponents in particular areas or get them out of particvular places, like perches.

The special weapon, the Wave Breaker, is perfect for a slow weapon like this. The damage it deals if someone trips a wave is also just enough that you can get them with in indirect hit while you stay safely away. Of course, opponents marked with a Wave Breaker can be tracked by your teammates too, and marking opponents is the best way to alert your teammates that someone might have slipped past them.

Because the Range Blaster is poor at inking and fights at a slow pace, it falters in Turf War, where opponents are much more spread out and, once ahead, can take their time by hiding. The Range Blaster's lengthy cooldown time between shots makes it a sitting duck for people who like to ambush. All four Anarchy modes have everyone packed closer together, which the Range Blaster prefers. Hence, this might not have been the best weapon to bring to a Splatfest, which is all Turf War.

This is something I see happen a lot: teammates wander WAY off and accomplish a lot of nothing. In Eeltail in particular, some people are also very obsessed with the bridge.

People new to this stage don't think about the path underneath. Getting the drop on them like that can throw them off their rhythm for the rest of the match.

Barnacle & Dime

Range Blaster

That Aerospray on our team inked less than 400p. They're the type who always insists on going way out at all costs and gets splatted a lot.

13:15 - Halftime

14:11 - Match #4
Bluefin Depot
Tricolor Battle (Attackers)
Range Blaster
Color Scheme: Secondary Shades
Song: “Till Depth Do Us Part” by Deep Cut
Octolings: 7
I've never seen so much infighting going on between Attacking Teams! Maybe it's the layout, but this is part of the reason why the Defending Teams had so much of an edge.

17:55 - Match #5
Bluefin Depot
Tricolor Battle (Attackers)
Range Blaster
Color Scheme: Secondary Shades
Song: “Fins in the Air” by Deep Cut
Octolings: 5
There's more infighting going on here, where the other Attackers aren't satisfied with making sure the Defenders lose, but went after us next!

21:36 - Match #6
Bluefin Depot
Tricolor Battle (Defenders)
Range Blaster
Color Scheme: Secondary Shades
Song: “Big Betrayal” by Deep Cut
Octolings: 7
And here, we get to sit back, relax, and watch the Attackers go after each other. I've never seen Tricolor this dysfunctional.

25:19 - Results!
