Here is this week's Surprise Trade, and I don't have any plans to show the Outbreak Event that is happening at the time, Baby Pokémon are the featured Pokémon, with Pichu and Happiny in Paldea, Munchlax and Riolu in Kitakami, and Elekid and Magby in the Terarium.
I chose the Pokémon for this week, and I went with a Grass-type starter Pokémon, I am never going to refer them as first partner Pokémon, and I don't like how even Bulbapedia uses that term and has completely changed from the term "Starter Pokémon". This week, I am trading Chikorita, and I breed for 31 IVs in at least 4 or 5 stats, and I went with Bold for the Nature, as Chikorita's evolution line is defensive focused, and I didn't go for the Hidden Ability of Leaf Guard, as it is not that good of an Ability.
For Egg Moves, I went with Ancient Power, Counter, Heal Pulse, and Ingrain, Chikorita can get Vine Whip and Flail, I never understood why Chikorita has Vine Whip as an Egg Move instead of an early level up move. Heal Pulse and Ancient Power are nice moves to have, while Counter and Ingrain filled in for Egg Moves.
Chikorita has Tackle and Growl for starting moves, and out of the Grass-type starter Pokémon, it gets Razor Leaf earlier, all others usually get Vine Whip, Leafage, or any other move of similar power. Its other moves are Poison Powder, Synthesis, Reflect, Magical Leaf, Leech Seed, Sweet Scent, Light Screen, Body Slam, Safeguard, Giga Drain, and Solar Beam. It evolves into Bayleef at Level 16, and then to its final evolution Meganium at Level 32, and it learns Petal Dance upon evolution and can get Petal Blizzard.
Next are TMs, and I will go over what Meganium can learn, it can get Charm, Fake Tears, Mud-Slap, Trailblaze, Bulldoze, Dragon Tail, Bullet Seed, Zen Headbutt, Seed Bomb, Grass Knot, Stomping Tantrum, Swords Dance, Body Press, Energy Ball, Encore, Grassy Terrain, Grass Pledge, Earthquake, Frenzy Plant, Giga Impact, Outrage, Leaf Storm, Hyper Beam, Tera Blast, Knock Off, Solar Blade, Weather Ball, Grassy Glide, Double-Edge, Endeavor, and Curse.
Out of all of the starter Pokémon, Meganium has had it rough, it was decent back in Gen 2 because of its good defensive stats, but throughout the generations, it has been a low tier Pokémon, or even unviable in the competitive scene due to being outclassed by better Pokémon, even certain NFE Pokémon like Tangela, Roselia, and Quilladin outclass it. Meganium is best at using Leech Seed and Giga Drain, and it can get Synthesis to heal up, and it has Body Press to make use of a move that uses its Defense stat. Meganium can go with a Swords Dance set with Petal Blizzard and Earthquake, and it can go with Tera Blast with a Fire or Rock Tera Type to deal with Pokémon that would normally wall it. When going defensive, Meganium's preferred Tera Type is Water or Fairy, as those are the best Tera Types defensively, while Fighting can go well with Body Press.
Meganium doesn't really have much use in Double Battles, while Heal Pulse stands out, it is outclassed by Clefairy and Hatterene which can get that move and are good in Trick Room teams, and Comfey which has Triage to give its healing moves priroity and access to Floral Healing, those are better options. Meganium can even set up screens with the Light Clay, but it competes with Grimmsnarl for that role, as well as Alolan Ninetales which can get Aurora Veil, and several other Pokémon that can set up screens and have higher Speed, like Regieleki, Scream Tail, and Dragapult are better choices, and Pokémon with Prankster like Klefki or Meowstic are the ones to go with.
In Tera Raid Battles, while some defensive Pokémon like Blissey or Umbreon provide some good support, Meganium once again competes with better Pokémon, that is when it comes to setting up screens, healing allies with Heal Pulse, or using Helping Hand to power up its ally's next move. When going through the game, the Chikorita line tend to have a hard time, this was very notable back in Gold & Silver where it had the type disadvantage against most of the Gym Leaders in Johto, but having Razor Leaf early on was what helped. In this game, it is a solid Grass-type, and it does get some good TMs like Bullet Seed and Trailblaze to help out, as Razor Leaf is Chikorita's main move, and when evolved to Bayleef, Magical Leaf becomes its main move once it learns the move, and it can get Petal Dance and Petal Blizzard when fully evolved. Meganium has some good support options like Reflect and Light Screen, and it can use Leech Seed to heal off the damage the opponent takes at the end of each turn, but other that that, support allies is what Meganium is best at, even when going through the main story. If Meganium had a better Ability like Regenerator, then it would be a better Pokémon in the competitive scene, or at least something that is better than Leaf Guard.
