Pokemon SoulSilver – Rival, Burned tower (no exp)
0Honestly this battle is a joke. I went and got almost everything I wanted for this part of the game and limited myself to four Pokemon and I didn't use the strongest ones like the plethora of Water-types that I caught while using the Good rod !
I could use almost any Normal-type to fight Gastly and win but I wanted to use this Miltank since her Scrappy ability lets her hit Ghost-types. Two Stomps are enough to finish him off while the worst Gastly can do is use Confuse ray then kill himself with Curse if Miltank hits herself.
Bayleef comes next and I send my Butterfree caught during the Bug-catching contest (only way to get one in Soulsilver) to poison his starter while I can tank anything, then I use Confusion to deal some damage. However I know that the AI tends to switch to Magnemite there so I also switch to my answer against it and that's Dratini. One Dragon rage is enough for a one shot while the worst Magnemite can do is try to haxx me to death but a Persim berry is more than enough to help with it. A Lum berry would be better but I planted the two I had in the Berry pots.
Zubat comes next and Magnemite is really good against it. I got a critical hit while Thundershock usually is a 2HKO but this matchup is almost impossible to lose especially with another Persim berry.
Bayleef comes back against my Dratini. It tries to poison it and misses but even if it hits it doesn't matter since Dragon rage deals more than enough damage to finish it with some poison damage. The other starters should also be really easy to deal with in this fight : you get Surf in Ecruteak city so any Water-type destroys Quilava and you have really good options against Croconaw as well such as Chinchou, Voltorb, Flaaffy, Gyarados and so on.
The next time you face him should be harder tbh, I think his team is at its weakest in this battle.
