A new Wild Area event, and one month since the last one we had, this one is live from December 17th till December 26th, and Winter themed Pokémon will be making an appearance, so expect to see some Ice-type Pokémon, well there's only three Pokémon that appear during the event, and two of the Pokémon are Ice-type Pokémon.
For this Holiday event, or Christmas event, the three Pokémon that appear are Starmie, Cryogonal, and the Christmas bird himself, Delibird, which does get a guaranteed Shiny appearance very rarely. For being one month since the last event, the previous one was around the release of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, so I guess Game Freak wanted to find a way to get me recording some Sword & Shield videos of some sort, and they succeeded.
Time to go over the Pokémon in the event, and despite Delibird being the Christmas bird, and there being a guaranteed chance of finding a Shiny Delibird, it is not that great of a Pokémon, it's Shiny form is just for Shiny collectors, and it has the redundant Ability of Insomnia for its Hidden Ability, when it already gets Vital Spirit, which has the same effect, I just don't understand why. At least Delibird can get Aerial Ace in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, which paired with Hustle is at least something, and it can learn Spikes, Rapid Spin, and Destiny Bond, but there are other Pokémon that can do the job way better than Delibird can.
Next up is Cryogonal, this is a more worthwhile Ice-type, it has high Special Defense and a good Speed stat, the downside is its low Defense and its type not being the best defensively, I find it strange how Glastrier managed to be top tier in Double Battles with a terrible defensive typing and low Speed stat, it is great in Trick Room for one thing. This isn't about Glastrier, so back to Cryogonal, it can learn some decent Ice-type moves, like Ice Beam, Icy Wind, Freeze-Dry, and many others, it can use Recover to heal itself, it can set up Light Screen and Reflect to support its teammates, its coverage is really limited, Flash Cannon and Solar Beam are the only other Special moves Cryogonal can get, aside from Ancient Power which is quite weak, and Hyper Beam which you should never be using on Cryogonal, and it has Levitate which is a good Ability to have.
The third one out of the Pokémon in the event is Starmie, and this one doesn't have good Abilities, its Hidden Ability is Analytic, which powers up Starmie's moves when it is last to attack, and this doesn't pair well as Starmie is already a fast Pokémon, and the only Pokémon that can even make the best use of Analytic is Beheeyem. Starmie has good Speed and Special Attack, and while it did use to be a top tier Special Attacker, it has faced powercreep through the generations, but it does remain a decent Special Attacker, and it does get some nice moves like Surf, Ice Beam, Psychic, Thunderbolt, and Dazzling Gleam, and it does get some good status moves like Recover, and it can use Rapid Spin which can be helpful in 6v6 battles. Starmie's best set is with Meteor Beam, and when equipped with a Power Herb, Starmie can fire off Meteor Beam right away, and with the Special Attack boost, and with Surf as its main move and either of Psychic, Thunderbolt, or Ice Beam to fill in its last few moves, Starmie is a Pokémon that has wide coverage, and it can be put to good use in battle.
