Here is one of my favourite Classic Mode routes, likely to do with the plot of it, but anyway, I am playing through Classic Mode with Donkey Kong in this video, and while he is the second character on the roster, I will explain about it here, I am using a list that I randomize to decide my next characters that I will play Classic Mode with, and the playlist will display fighters in order of how they are displayed on the roster, so in this case, Donkey Kong is the second character on the roster, while Mario is the first character in roster order.
Donkey Kong's Classic Mode route is Journey to New Donk City, and this is a very interesting Classic Mode route, as it is a story of how Donkey Kong starts off in his jungle, and visits towns during his trip to New Donk City.
In Round 1, your opponent is Diddy Kong, and you fight him on Kongo Jungle, and every battle after that one, Diddy Kong will be your CPU Ally for the rest of the Classic Mode route. In Round 2, you fight King K. Rool on Kongo Falls. In Round 3, your opponents are Wario and Captain Falcon, and they are fought on Pilotwings, I do like the setting for that fight, where Donkey Kong boards a plane, and the music for that fight likely is a reference to the Rocket Barrel courses in Donkey Kong Country Returns, like Gear Getaway. In Round 4, you fight Ness and Lucas in Onett, and in Round 5, your opponents are the Inklings, who are fought on Moray Towers, which is likely a reference to 25m from the classic Donkey Kong game, for this one, Donkey Kong visits various towns and cities on his way to his destination.
In Round 6, Donkey Kong has finally made his way to New Donk City Hall, and alongside Diddy Kong, their opponents are Mario and Luigi. Then we get the Bonus Stage, and after that, you fight Master Hand on New Donk City Hall, and with Diddy Kong as a CPU Ally, Donkey Kong is the only character on the base roster to fight Master Hand on any stage other than Final Destination, some of the DLC characters do fight Master Hand on other stages, but if we are going by the base roster, Donkey Kong is the only character to do so, and if you are playing on Intensity 7.0 or higher, you do have to fight Crazy Hand as well.
After completing Classic Mode with Donkey Kong, we get the credits, which plays Donkey Kong Country Returns (Vocals) for the song, and you earn the Fighter Spirit for Donkey Kong, there are other Spirits, like Donkey Kong & Lady, and there is Donkey Kong & Bongos, which is from Donkey Konga, a music game for the GameCube, and this was Donkey Kong's Final Smash in Brawl and Smash 4.
As Donkey Kong is one of the starting characters on the roster, he has his own unlock tree, so what that means is that when you complete Classic Mode with that character, you unlock a character from that character's unlock tree, and if you play as the character you unlocked, it will unlock the next character from the base character's unlock tree. For Donkey Kong's unlock tree, the following characters you unlock by completing Classic Mode with Donkey Kong are Bowser, Pokémon Trainer, Rosalina & Luma, King Dedede, Sheik, Greninja, Diddy Kong, and Duck Hunt Duo, and once every character in Donkey Kong's unlock tree are unlocked, it will default back to Mario's unlock tree.
