Power Strike II Hard Mode ALL CLEAR (Score: 3,053,780)
The very first 1cc replay uploaded for Power Strike II Hard Mode 1cc on the online leaderboards, I think? Surprisingly the harder modes of the game aren't that popular, perhaps for a good reason. At least I do think the Hard Mode deserves to be All Cleared.
The main differentiator of the difficulties are the enemy fire rates, which is fine and dandy, but the sucky part is the enemies' HP are increased. Popcorn enemies don't get affected by this but the chunky ones do. On Hard Mode it's still within humane levels: hard, but not nasty. A beautiful way to enjoy the game and the HP increase is only around +50%, which makes the rhythm for DPS maximization more beautiful. But on Great and Wild, it's ridiculous. The fire rate is too thick, the HP gets increased by around +100%(!?), AND on Wild the enemies will fire counter bullets! The tactics required becomes so nasty it's not fun anymore! Hard Mode still keep your sanity and fun!
The harder difficulties are also a great showcase of Master System's prowess. The console can handle lots of bullets at once pretty well, huh? Just flickers, no slowdowns! I think in the future someone that is insane enough will make a CAVE-style shmup for the underrated Sega Master System. I'd love to see that.
For the tactics, on Hard Mode the game is packed with bullets and enemies are dancing all around. Sounds counterintuitive to say this since this shot has low fire rate, but on general Shot 6 is recommended for defensive purposes. You gotta be good at controlling the rhythm, though. When a new one is about to be shot, stay at the bottom of the screen, then stay at where the shot lands. It will provide you safety against flying enemies and stray bullets. Make sure to go back to the bottom again to ensure the shot lands on the optimal spot again. It's not omnipotent, though, which is a sign of Power Strike II's design brilliance. 0 is great for higher, concentrated DPS and 1 is great for handling vast amount of enemies, especially on high speed sections. 2 and 4 are pretty usable, 3 is best reserved for bosses, and that is if you're confident, and 5 you need to point blank by the side for this shot to be effective. The fire rate isn't ideal for later stages with large swarms of enemies.
Even with Shot 6's protection, you need to shoot certain enemies as soon as possible. The game isn't as cheesable as GG Aleste 2's Mania Mode. The mode is a good test for your skill as a shmup player. Much recommended! But do NOT touch Great and Wild. Those modes are for masochists only!
