Before Sonic, there was Psycho Fox.
You play as a Fox Deity (this was before they were cute girls) and you use Shinto sticks to transform into different animals.
The Fox is your average creature, and you can easily complete the whole game only using him.
The Hippo is extremely slow, but it is also the only character that can destroy blocks that are in your way.
The Monkey jumps higher than everybody else.
The Tiger is the fastest of them all.
You can also pick up Birdfly, a bird that you carry around and throw at your enemies. Kid Kool and DecapAttack are other games from Vic Tokai that play the same with the Birdfly mechanism.
It is a nice little game that got two problems.
The first one is the controller. The controls are great, but the controller itself only got one D-pad and two buttons. In order to open the menu so you can switch character or use an item, you must hit the Pause Button on the console itself.
The second one is the same as early Sonic games, the game is pretty fast, especially with the Tiger, but you can't enjoy going fasy because there is a high chance that the next screen will throw a trap at you, like an enemy that you will run into.
Most levels got 3 different paths that you can chose, one at the top, one in the middle and one at the bottom, so it takes a while before you have seen everything in the game. It feels like Sonic the Hedgehog looked at this game for inspiration.
